Top Ah Neh gives out awards yet again!

Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Raja Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Ali bin Hj Awang Md Daud, president of Brunei Darussalam National Scouts Association, recently received the 'Silver Lion' Award from the Singapore Scouts Association at the Presidential palace.

The 'Silver Lion' Award was presented by Mr S R Nathan, the president of the Republic of Singapore in his capacity as the head of Singapore Scout Association.

The award honoured Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Raja Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Ali's contribution to young people through excellent service to the scout movement.

Also receiving the award were scout leaders of Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Singapore.

The Silver Lion Award is conferred on adult leaders who have served the Association with great loyalty and whose contributions have made a significant impact on the Scout movement in Singapore.

Err... why give foreigners then???

Indian man retracts statement, jailed for 25 years

An Indian national who tried to retract his admission to having consensual sex with his stepdaughter since she was 11 was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to be caned the maximum 24 strokes, news reports said on Friday.

The 37-year-old information technology specialist gave police five statements over a three-week period, after his arrest in May 2007, when he confessed in detail.

In court on Thursday, he insisted that there had been no sexual relationship between them at all. “Where's the proof?” The Straits Times quoted him as asking during final arguments in which he defended himself.

The Singapore resident cannot be identified to protect the girl's identity.

The step-father said he gave police “false statements” out of fear and to get the investigations over with so that he could tell the truth when he got to court. “In my fear and using my imagination, I gave such a story as I was told to do so,” he said, noting he had been handled roughly by police officers.

He stuck with the same version in talks with a psychiatrist, claiming he was still frightened. He also complained that the police had not stopped his wife and stepdaughter, both key witnesses, from leaving in August for India.

He claimed that he had been set up by the two of them after they learned of his affair with a colleague.

The Interpol bureau in India has been asked to help find the mother and daughter, now 14.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Gordon Oh said the victim's absence is not a reason for acquittal. The law states that a person can be convicted on his statements to the police as long as the court is satisfied they were made voluntarily.

The law states that anyone who has sex with a child below the age of 14, with or without consent, is guilty of statutory rape.

President Nathan, MM Lee to attend Beijing Olympics

President S R Nathan will attend the Beijing Games from Aug 12 to 16, in support of the Singapore's National Team. MINISTER Mentor Lee Kuan Yew will represent Singapore at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on Aug 8, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. MM Lee will return for the National Day celebrations on Aug 9.

Following that, President S R Nathan will attend the Beijing Games from Aug 12 to 16, in support of the Singapore's National Team.

After Beijing, President Nathan will visit Henan and return to Singapore on Aug 18.

So its Eat wind all the way...Enjoyment.

Oh Poor Chink

President S R Nathan said he is especially saddened by the great loss of lives, which include many children and youths, following Monday's earthquake in China.

In his letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao, Mr Nathan praised how the government has mobilised its people and its "unflagging effort and swift response to the disaster, despite the limitations of the terrain and distance".

President Nathan also said he is confident that under President Hu's leadership, China will quickly overcome the consequences of the tragedy and "restore the people's confidence and resoluteness" in facing such a disaster.

Mr Nathan said he hopes the affected regions will return to normalcy as soon as possible.

Singapore Help out in the China's Quake

A 55-STRONG team from Singapore will leave for earthquake-hit Chengdu province in China on Friday to help the local authorities in their search and rescue efforts.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said the contingent from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) will be led by LTC Ng How Juah, Commander of the 4th Civil Defence Division.

MFA said Singapore is sending the overseas rescue team at China's request.

Minor sons found dead, probe focuses on Indian-origin father

An Indian-origin man is being investigated by the UK police after his two minor sons were found stabbed to death in a burnt car in Glasgow.

Ashok Kalyanjee, the father of six-year-old Paul and two-year-old Jay who were discovered in a blood-spattered car on Saturday, is in critical condition after he suffered burn injuries while allegedly trying to set afire the vehicle.

The police said they were waiting to interview Kalyanjee,40, who is under police guard at a hospital in Glasgow. The police confirmed they were treating the deaths of the two children as murder.

Their mother, Giselle Ross, in a short statement said: “Paul and Jay were beautiful boys who were well-loved by all the family and everyone who knew them.”

The couple are understood to have been separated and Kalyanjee, a former post office worker who was described locally as a taxi driver living in the Cowcaddens area of central Glasgow, had weekend visiting rights to his sons, The Guardian reported.

“They did not deserve to die. Paul wasn’t even allowed to play outside in case he came to any harm,” Ross said.

“Both boys loved their mum they were real mummy’s boys. They are irreplaceable and are greatly missed by all the family.”

Paul had been a well-liked pupil at Royston primary school, said his head teacher, Elizabeth Davidson. “Paul was a lovely, well-behaved, quiet young boy. I’m certain that children who knew Paul and his brother will be devastated when they learn of this tragic news,” she said.

“The school has been made aware of the incident and will be supporting the mother in any way it can. Our thoughts and prayers are with her at this sad time,” she said.

Prataman visits Lord of the Rings

President S R Nathan visited New Zealand from 25 April to 1 May 2008. This was the first State Visit by a Singapore Head of State to New Zealand.

In Wellington, President Nathan met senior New Zealand leaders including Governor-General Anand Satyanand, Prime Minister Helen Clark and Deputy Leader of the Opposition Bill English.

President Nathan was accompanied by Mrs Nathan, Minister for National Development Mr Mah Bow Tan and Mrs Mah, Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Balaji Sadasivan and Mrs Sadasivan, Members of Parliament Ms Penny Low and Dr Muhammad Faishal and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Musa was asked to make a sentence using 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
Not only did he do it 1 to 10, he did it again from 10 back to 1. This is what he came up with.....

1 day I go 2 climb a 3 outside a house to peep. But the couple saw me, so I panic and 4 down. The man rushed out and wanted to 5 with me. I ran until I fell 6 and threw up. So I go into 7-even and grabbed some 8 to throw at him. Then I took a 9 and try to stab at him. 10 God he run away.

10 I put the 9 back and pay for the 8 and left 7 -eleven. Next day I called my boss and told him I was 6 . He said 5 , tomorrow also no need to come back 4 work. He also asked me to go climb a 3and jump down. I don't understand. I am so nice 2 him but I don't know what he 1 .

Free meals for Ah Nehs

THERE may be no such thing as a free lunch, but two non-profit groups here are adamant on handing out free breakfasts.

Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2), a research and advocacy group for migrant workers, has teamed up with One Singapore - a local campaign to end global poverty - to provide free morning nourishment to about 80 homeless and penniless Indian workers every weekday.

The meals are typically made up of an uttapam - an Indian pancake - and a cup of coffee or tea.

The project, started a week ago, aims to help more than an estimated 50 workers from India who have made the walkways along Cuff Road their home, some for as long as a year.

They have allegedly been deserted by their employers after being injured while working, or are waiting in Singapore until the cases pending against their former employers are heard.

They are issued Special passes (S-passes) in the meantime, which forbids them to take on permanent employment.

"I let them come in to use my toilet or fill up their water bottles. I feel so sorry for them but this is the only way I can help," said Mr S Shanmuganathan, 54, manager of Sutha's Restaraunt on Cuff Road, which provides the free breakfasts.

To qualify for the free food, served from 7am to 9am, Mondays to Fridays, workers have to show their S-pass or a letter from their doctor or lawyer and have their names recorded.

TWC2 and One Singapore have been footing the breakfast bill - of $2 a worker - with donations from the public.

Church volunteer groups and the nearby Perumal temple also provide the workers with free dinners on weekdays, but these are given out on an ad hoc basis.

"Food is a basic human need and we wanted to focus on breakfast particularly so the workers can have a positive start to each day," said TWC2 helpline manager Sha Najak.

She estimates, however, that the $2,200 balance they have left in their coffers for the project will only be enough for the next two months.

Plumber Mr Ayyavoo Thuniayar, 34, is one thankful recipient of the food service. The Tamil Nadu native has been going to the restaurant every morning for the past two weeks.

At night, he sleeps outside the Singapore Gujarat Society's premises on 36 Cuff Road. He has been stationed there for the past two months after being evicted from his workers quarters by his employer, a local construction firm, following a worksite accident in January that left him with a crushed leg.

A medical certificate exempts him from work until May 12 but the full insurance payout will be made out to him after he is fully recovered, he said.

He added: "My employers divert me to one another when I ask for the salary they owe me. Now I have no money for a room or food.

"If this is only happening to me, it's okay, but it is the same story with many and they are scared to speak out.

For this, must raise pay. Good people are Hard to Find.

Complaint I received

SR Nathan graduated from the old University of Malaya in Singapore with a Diploma in Social Work. Whilst he could have had read Law or any other money making course, he chose to dedicate himself to the betterment of his fellow man by pursuing such a qualification.

His thesis on the "Exploitation of Asian workers in the Harbour Board" caught the eyes of those in power, and upon graduation, he was quickly enlisted to serve the Board to settle the problems he hada surfaced.

As a civil servant, he was place in the line of fire when he was offered as a hostage to terrorists in place of some poor Malay boatmen seized by the Jap and Arab terrorists. When asked how he managed to stay calm while held as hostage by the terrorists, SR Nathan replied : "I was a trained social worker".

Some of you disrepecfully call him Prataman. SR Nathan deserves more respect. He is Head of State not because of the money. If you must make noise, it's the politicians that deserve your venom. SR Nathan was never a politician. He is a brave son of Singapore.

Many also called SR and LKY traitors for working for the Japanese. Please note that they were working for the Japanese civilian adminstration, not the blood thirsty Jap Army. There were many decent Japs working in the civilian administration for the good of the people. (One Mr Shinozaki even saved the lives of countless Chinese by giving them safe-conduct passes indiscrimately. One of my uncles was a Chinese volunteer with the Local Defence Forces. He obtained a safe conduct pass from Shinozaki though he bore arms against the Japs.)
My point is SR Nathan did not do anything against the people.......so stop calling him names which does not reflect the Truth.

COI LEEport?

I have no doubt that the detention centre serves its purpose to extract vital info that has prevented potentially worse terror acts in S'pore and around the region, but what S'poreans want to know now is the latest progress of the hunt for S'pore's most wanted man.

& when the oridinary folk make mistake, you explain and punished for the mistake (at the mercy/mood of the judge) when big-shot makes mistake, someone will try to explain for him/her and the judge will probably help to reduce the charge with loads of excuses

Honour Prataman?

What social contribution or volunteering work has Prataman did since his HUGE pay increase?

President S R Nathan has been conferred the title of ‘Fellow’ by the Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW) for his significant contributions to the social work profession and to society at large.

This was the highlight at the annual Social Workers' Day dinner celebrations which was attended by more than 600 social workers.

Mr Nathan also launched a commemorative book entitled ‘A World to Change: Inspiring Lives in Social Work’. The book documents real-life stories of social workers in the past 50 years.

At the event, SASW also revealed that in a survey of 80 social workers, two-thirds received a higher pay, thanks to increased funding from the Community Development, Youth and Sports Ministry in 2007.

The average pay increase was about S$230. The remaining 33 per cent said their agencies had either not implemented any pay increase or did so selectively.

The survey respondents added that a competitive salary is important in attracting and retaining talent.

Incredible India

The tourism authorities in India are tightening security to prevent groping hands of sexual perverts from spoiling the experience of holidaymakers lured to the country with a promise of 'Incredible India!'

Top tourism officials, including those in charge of Goa and Kerala states on India's western seaboard which are top draws with beach tourists, have been summoned to New Delhi for intensive consultations.

They will discuss steps to address a menace that threatens to take the sheen off a global advertising campaign which drew five million tourists to India last year and earned the country more than US$12 billion (S$17 billion).

Some 80,000 of those tourists had travelled from Singapore, according to government estimates.

News reports suggest that more than 10 foreign women were molested in various parts of India in the first two weeks of this year.

In the latest incident, a British woman was reportedly raped in Goa on Friday night, just days after a Russian woman was molested there. The beach shack owner who molested the Russian woman has been arrested while police have released an identity sketch of the rape suspect, news reports said.

Chief Minister Digamber Kamat has vowed to nail the culprit in 48 hours.

'We are adopting zero tolerance in such cases,' he told reporters on Sunday. 'We are dealing with each case seriously.'

Goa gained a reputation in the 1960s and 1970s as the favoured watering hole for hippies and marijuana users. Today, thousands of upmarket tourists throng the place.

The Goa incidents came even as a 12-year-old Indian-Canadian girl and her older sister were groped by a security guard at a resort hotel in Kumarakom, a popular tourist destination in the southern state of Kerala.

The guard, 27-year-old Shyju Varghese, was arrested hours after the girls' father lodged a complaint on Sunday. However, the traumatised family chose to end their holiday early and returned to Canada.

Mr V. Venu, Kerala's top official for tourism, told The Straits Times in a telephone interview: 'We cannot condone a single incident, even if it is a lewd remark.

'The hotel that employed the security guard had been careless in outsourcing security. We cannot stop the odd pervert but this one seemed like it could have been avoided.'

Kerala, India's most literate state, is among the country's fastest-growing tourism spots. Last year, it drew 500,000, or 10 per cent, of India's foreign tourists.

The state, particularly its most popular Kovalam beach, had a rash of molest cases in the mid-1990s but a high level of vigilance by the authorities had almost rubbed out the menace.

Of late, however, some cases have surfaced.

On New Year's Eve in the port city of Kochi, formerly Cochin, a beach party was marred by the groping of a young Swedish tourist.

'We are enjoying Kerala and having a good time,' the father of the child told a television reporter who was filming in the area. 'But even as we speak my 15-year-old daughter has just had her behind grabbed by a man.'

Even Mumbai, which shares a reputation with Bangalore as being safe for women, has had some adverse attention lately.

On New Year's Day, readers of the Hindustan Times in New Delhi and Mumbai awoke to screaming headlines that read: 'Shame Old Story'.

The daily catalogued the travails of two young couples who wandered out from the discotheque of the JW Marriott hotel in Mumbai.

A mob on the beach outside laid hands on the women, even as their menfolk tried to protect them. Mumbai police have since picked up several men, using the newspaper photographs as evidence.

India Presents the “One-Lakh Car”



Four years in the making, Tata Motor produced a so-called “one-lakh car”, (one lakh being the Indian term for 100,000) aimed squarely at members of India’s 300-million-strong middle class. Dubbing it the “People’s Car,” Tata hopes to entice consumers with a four to five seater, four-door, rear-engine car with about 30 hp (horsepower).

“It's about necessity. People require four wheels. They cannot go on a bike or scooter anymore. It's entry level cars. Larger cars are for people with extra money. The first car is always a small car,” says Himanshu Tandon, a general manager for sales at one Delhi Hyundai dealership.

The potential for growth and profit in the small-car sector is high. It is estimated that India has a vehicle density of only seven cars per thousand people, compared to the US which already has 477 per thousand. In 2006 alone, an astonishing one million cars were sold in India, with the annual growth rate of sales pegged at 16 percent.

With these figures, it’s no wonder car-makers are all jumping eagerly onto the proverbial bandwagon. Nissan-Renault recently revealed that it too would also strategize how to produce its version of the $3000 car, while India’s Hero Group, a well-known motorcycle manufacturer, is reportedly collaborating with a Canadian company on a mini-car. Maruti-Suzuki is busy with what they call a “competitively-priced” 660cc vehicle; South India’s Bajaj Auto will introduce their entry-level model during next year’s national Auto Expo. Even Xenetis, India’s low-cost computer maker, intends to develop a low-cost car. Tata Motors is going even further by exploring different possibilities with General Electric (GE) in whether the cars could be made from GE’s engineered plastics.

Despite all these shiny, bright ideas, the environmental cost of such a car is not lost on some who argue that instead of pursuing a wasteful, Western model of transportation, public transportation instead should be emphasized, especially at time when India and China are both facing intense pressure to reduce their carbon emissions.

“What we are really worried about is the congestion and the pollution,” said Anumita Roychowdhury, associate director of the Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment. “In Delhi, public transports manage more than 60 per cent of the transport demand and, if you add the numbers using the new Metro, that is going to increase the [percentage using public transport]. Our immediate policy should be to retain and protect this so that people who are already using it... do not make the move to cars. It is aspirational - people who want to buy cars. But the question should be how easy should we be making it for them?... Once they have started using cars it, will be hard to get them back.”

Indian president Manmohan Singh commented however that India’s current growth may go hand-in-hand with environmental self-empowerment. “Due care must be taken not to allow growth and development prospects in the developing world to be undermined or constrained ... More and not less development is the best way for developing countries to address themselves to the issue of preserving the environment and protecting the climate,” he said

Preamble

Over the last 15 years, Indian industry has worked hard on putting the basic building blocks of competitiveness into place. It has worked strongly to improve operational efficiency, quality, productivity and customer orientation. In this effort, CII has worked closely with its members through structured programmes.

Today, Indian industry is competitive; it has restructured itself; and, it is acquiring a global footprint.

It is now time for Indian industry - as indeed India - to set sights on a new and higher trajectory of competitiveness and globalisation.

The Context

The Indian economy has never had it so good.
Three years of close to 9% growth.
Outstanding performance in the services and industry sectors, both growing at over 11%.
The macro economic indicators of the nation extremely sound.
Investment as a percentage of GDP at a record high.
In the industry and services sectors, innovation, education and dynamism are the order of the day. Indian industry is today resurgent, confident and global in its aspirations.

This is the good news

To catch the next wave of growth, industry has to take note of - rising expectations of customer both in India and overseas; increasing competition from all parts of the globe; the pressure on competitiveness. But the greatest challenge that Indian industry is beginning to grapple with - be it in small, medium or large sectors - is that of talent acquisition and retention. While all sectors seem to be doing extremely well, they also have begun to experience the crunch of people and talent availability in the right measure.

India's Reality

320 million children in India are between the age of 6 and 16. Out of this only 10% will pass school and go beyond.
Approximately 280 million people live below the poverty line and nearly 400 million people in India, live below $2 a day.
India's per capita is at $460, while Sri Lanka is $833 and US is at $30,000.
40 million unemployed people and this numbers are growing. In the next 5 years, the figure could reach to as much as 60 million people, more than entire populations of France, Italy and UK.
90% workforce in the unorganized sector.
30% casual labour with no regular source of income.
India has the youngest population in the world. The median range is 24 and every other population in the world is getting older.
2.5 mn graduates passing out of colleges each year without skills connecting to employment. Mismatch between educational system output and Industry's manpower requirements.
India's opportunity

The correction is not impossible because India also faces a unique opportunity. It is the youngest population in the world; its median age in 2000 was less than 24, compared to 38 for Europe and 41 for Japan. Even China had a median age of 30. Alternatively viewed, this means that India has the unique opportunity to complement what an ageing rest of the world needs the most - productive workers. India in 2025 will have a dependency ratio of 12.1, i.e., for every 100 working-age adults there will be slightly more than 12 persons who are above the age of 65. For China the ratio will be 19.4, for Japan 49, for Europe 33.2.

It is in this context that CII has chosen as its theme for 2007-08 : Building People - Building India.

The Agenda for Action

The core focus of CII work, activities and events will, therefore, relate to people and ways and means of making them efficient, entrepreneurial and innovative - all with the aim of making India and Indian industry even more competitive.

CII will work with the youth in a multi-dimensional mode - adopting the four Missions which were introduced last year :

The approach would be to work strongly in identifying manpower needs, talent gaps and working strongly to make India the undisputed global leader in the matter of skills and talent. Every sector would be catered to - Manufacturing, IT, ITES, Telecom, BPO, Engineering Process Outsourcing, Retail and Agri-business.

In its efforts, CII will focus sharply on fulfilling the needs of small and medium enterprises which form a significant portion of the membership.

To sum up

CII - at the National, Regional, State and Zonal levels - would implement a programme of work which begins to effectively convert the human raw material in our country into a productive force to bolster the competitiveness of Indian industry. Massive programmes covering school dropouts to engineers and PHDs will form a key element of our initiative. In addition, the huge requirement of personnel in the growth sectors of the economy will be addressed. This is besides the initiative on affirmative action which is already underway.

In this multi-pronged approach, the four Missions of CII will provide the vehicles of delivery.

CII believes that the next big ticket item on its agenda ought to be BUILDING PEOPLE - BUILDING INDIA.

I Kind of Like this One...

Musa leans over and asks his wife, "Do you remember the first
time we had sex together over fifty years ago? We went behind this

A police officer sitting in the next booth heard their conversation

The elderly couple walks haltingly along, leaning on each other for
support aided by walking sticks. Finally, they get to the back of the
tavern and make their way to the fence. The old lady lifts her skirt
and the old man drops his trousers.

As she leans against the fence, the old man moves in. Then suddenly
they erupt into the most furious sex that the policeman has ever
seen. This goes on for about ten minutes while both are making loud
noises and moaning and screaming.

Finally, they both collapse, panting on the ground.

The policeman is amazed. He thinks he has learned something about
life and old age that he didn't know.

After about half an hour of lying on the ground recovering, the old
couple struggle to their feet and put their clothes back on.

The Policeman, is still watching and thinks to himself, this is truly
amazing, I've got to ask them what their secret is. So, as the couple
passes, he says to them, "Excuse me, but that was something else. You
must've had a fantastic sex life together. Is there some sort of
secret to this?"

Shaking, the old man is barely able to reply, "Fifty years ago, that
wasn't an ELECTRIC FENCE!!"

Singh or Ah Neh - The dark Forces!

At the First Youth for Peace Interfaith Symposium organized by the Singapore Soka Association at Singapore Expo Hall, a representative each of five religions, namely Sikhism, Baha'i Faith, Catholicism, Hinduism and Buddhism, spoke on the theme "Humanizing Religions, Creating Peace".

Satwant Singh, told 4,000 youths of different religions how he had handled people who called him "Mang-ka-li", "Bayee Singh" or "Babu Singh". He said that instead of feeling offended, he would explain his religion to the persons concerned over a cup of coffee. He related his experiences to illustrate the points that misunderstanding of others' religions may cause friction and that enlightening others on one's religion is far better than flying into a rage.

In his opening speech for the symposium, Foreign Minister George Yeo underscored the role of the Government in fostering religious harmony. He pointed out that the Government must always be secular and must take into account the interests of Singaporeans as a whole and not just those of a particular religious group. Hence, from time to time, the Government must act to defuse conflicts.

Singapore disallowed publication of Danish cartoons of Prophet Muhammad in Singapore and stepped in when pictures of Jesus Christ were put on the floor of MRT stations as advertisements for the movie Da Vinci Code. When Taoist joss sticks for the Hungry Ghost Festival grew bigger and bigger, causing air pollution, and when the volume of loudspeakers used by mosques for their azan (prayer calls) were found too high, the Government consulted religious leaders before adopting compromise solutions.

An Indian man died and went to heaven.
When he arrived at the heaven Gate, Lord Siva said, "Come on in. I'll show you around. You'lllike it here."

Walking through the gates, the man noticed clocks everywhere?
There were grandfather clocks, wall clocks, watches, and clocks in every corner.
It appeared that heaven was nothing more than a giant clock warehouse.

Surprised at how heaven looked, the man asked, "Lord Siva, what's the deal?

Why are all these clocks here in heaven? Lord Siva replied, "The clocks keep track of things on earth. There is one clock for each person.

Every time the person on earth tells a lie, his clock moves one minute."
"For instance, this clock is for Aru, the used car salesman. If you watch it closely, it will move.

"Click" The minute hand on Aru's clock moved one minute. "Click" It moved another minute. "Aru must be into closing a customer right now," said Lord Siva. "The minute hand on his clock moves all day."

The man and Lord Siva continued walking. Soon, they came to a clock with cobwebs on the minute hand. "Whose clock is this?" asked the man. That clock belongs to the Widow Achi. She is one of the finest,God-fearing, people on earth.I bet her clock hasn't moved in a year or two."

They continued walking and touring heaven. The man enjoyed watching the clocks of all his friends. When the tour was finished, the man said,"I've seen everyone's clock but Mr. Samy Vellu's. Where is his clock?

Lord Siva smiled, "Just look up. We use his clock as a ceiling fan."

Bad Malaysians

The old priest lay dying in the hospital. For years He had faithfullyserved the people of the nation's capital. He motioned to the nurse tocome near.

"Yes, Father?" she said.

"I would really like to see Khairy and Samy Velu before I die", whispered the priest.

"I'll see what I can do, Father" replied the nurse.

The nurse sent the request to them and waited for a response. Soon theword arrived. Khairy and Samy would be delighted to visit the priest.

As they went to the hospital, Khairy commented to Samy "I don't know whythe old priest wants to see us, but it will certainly help our images."
Samy couldn't help but agree.

When they arrived at the priest's room, the priest took Samy's hand inhis right hand and Khairy's hand in his left. There was silence and a lookof serenity on the old priest's face.

Finally Samy spoke. "Father, of all the people you could have chosen, why did you choose us to be with you as you near the end ?"

The old priest slowly replied : "I have always tried to pattern my lifeafter our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."

The old priest continued......"He died between two lying thieves. I wouldlike to do the same."

Escape of JI leader: How can this happen in S'pore?

MANY Singaporeans reacted to news of the escape of JI leader Mas Selamat Kastari from a high-security detention centre with disbelief and incredulity.

This posting from Jordan Tan in the straitstimes.com discussion board aptly summed up the reaction of many others: 'Hello, this is Singapore. How can this happen?'

Added cc1034: 'How can a highly dangerous person escape from a highly secured prison?'

Another disbelieving reader, who goes by the monicker howaiyee, said: 'Security at the detention centre is 'tight'. He walks with a limp. Yet he managed to escape. What a shame!'
'How can we feel safe anymore?' said a worried Lim Boon Hee.

Mas Selamat, 47, who heads the Singapore Jemaah Islamiyah terror network, escaped from the Whitley Road Detention Centre at 4.05 pm on Wednesday, sparking an island-wide manhunt involving thousands of police, SAF, Gurkha and Special Operations Command forces.

The Straits Times online discussion board has also been buzzing with readers' comments, with postings coming in at 3 am in the morning. As at 2.15 pm, there were 186 postings on this issue, with 16,528 views.

Many readers expressed concern about the breach of security which allowed the terror leader to slip away.

Said raymond_lo: 'I feel throughly let down by our security men.'

A user who signed off as a 'terrified student from SCGS', said she would not be going to school on Thursday.

Several also urged the authorities to provide more information about the escape.

Said shean777: 'Please, Home Affairs Minister, say something or more importantly, DO something!'

Indeed, a user who went by the name lib27 put it bluntly: 'The whole Singapore is waiting for an answer.'

Many readers also offered tips and advice to catch the JI leader.

Suggested mr.speakersir: 'Perhaps the authorities might seriously warn Singaporeans and whoever else in Singapore about the cosequences of sheltering him.. and whoever provides leads to his whereabouts and subsequent capture should be rewarded ... Singaporeans just love rewards!' He also suggested plastering his picture island-wide, terming it the 'great Singapore terrorist hunt.'

A reader readi suggested a CCTV system that could hook up images of all passengers in taxis that could be beamed to a centralised system.

Many also rallied Singaporeans to pitch in the search for the wanted man.

Reader jchlee urged 'all to keep a lookout for this damn fella, and help the SPF nab him before he really wreaks havoc in Singapore.'

3 INDIANS and 3 FRENCH are travelling by train to a Cricket match at the World Cup. At the station, the 3 FRENCH buy a ticket each and watch as the 3 INDIANS buy just one ticket for them all.

"How are the 3 of you going to travel on only oneticket?" asks one of the FRENCH. "Watch and learn," answers one of the INDIAN.

They all board the train. The FRENCH take their respective seats but all 3 INDIANS cram into a toilet and close the door behind them. Shortly after the train departs, the conductor comes around collecting tickets. He knocks on the toilet door and says, "Ticket please. " The door opens just a crack and a single arm emerges with a ticket in hand.The conductor takes it and moves on.

The FRENCH see this and agree it was quite a clever idea. So after the game,they decide to copy the INDIAN style on the returntrip and save some money.

When they get to the station, they buy one ticket for three on the return trip. To their astonishment, the INDIANS don't buy ticket at all!!! How are you going to travel without a ticket?" says one perplexed FRENCH. "Watch and learn," answers an INDIAN.

When they board the train the 3 FRENCH cram into one toilet and soon after the 3 INDIANS cram into another nearby toilet.The train departs. Shortly afterwards, one of the INDIAN leaves the toilet and walks over to the toilet where the FRENCH are hiding.

New Knights for the King!

President SR Nathan has appointed new members to the Council of Presidential Advisers (CPA). The appointments take effect from 2 January.

Retired High Court judge, Mr Goh Joon Seng, was appointed as a member of the CPA for a term of six years.

Also appointed, as alternate members of the CPA for a four-year term, are chairman of Keppel Corp, Mr Lim Chee Onn, and SIA's chairman and president of the Singapore National Employers' Federation, Mr Stephen Lee Ching Yen.

The President's Office also announced that Dr Cheong Siew Keong has retired as a member of the CPA upon the expiry of his term on 1 January.

The CPA continues to be chaired by Mr J Y Pillay, chairman of the Singapore Exchange. The other members are Mr S Dhanabalan, Professor Cham Tao Soon, Mr Po'ad Bin Shaik Abu Bakar Mattar and Mr Yong Pung How.

Dr Cheong has served on the Council since its inception in January 1992, and President Nathan deeply appreciates his 16 years of invaluable service on the Council.

According to the Istana website, it is obligatory for the President to consult the Council before he vetoes the budgets of the government and key government-linked bodies.

Pre-paid phone cards - FTs are using them

PAYPHONES are dead? Think again. Go to any foreign worker haunt in Singapore and the amount of advertising for payphone services will astound. Thai, Myanmar, Hindi - the ads are tailored in the language of these foreign workers.

With pre-paid phone cards, everything is dead simple. No registration. No set up. Never mind a PC, you don't even need your own phone!

Two flavours are available. Chipcards, which can be used only on phones equipped to read the embedded chip. Scratch cards, in contrast, contain a PIN which can used on any type of phone.

It costs only 8.5 cents a minute for the scratch card. Not the cheapest but it involves the least hassle.

"I don't need to subscribe to a phone plan, and I am only charged for the amount of time that I use," said 31-year-old Filipino domestic worker Jasmine Argapao who swears by StarHub calling cards.

The StarHub HomeConnect Card wins hands down for cost. But over the phone, the voice of my friend in Thailand lacked her usual punch, though it was clear.

I used the cheapest "Special Promotions" plan. HomeConnect offers two higher plans: IDD 018 and IDD 008. The low-level white noise during pauses in the conversation didn't affect clarity. Also, it took more than 10 seconds before I got a connection. Standard phone charges apply.

Using a toll-free number on the SingTel Hello! Card, connection was immediate. The rates are higher but my Thailand friend sounded like she was in Singapore, bright and totally clear.

One more tip: Buy the cards from your heartland mom-and-pop shop. I got 50 cents off on both the $10 cards I bought.

Who killed benazir bhutto?


Khalid Khwaja, a former Pakistani intelligence officer and self-declared friend of bin Laden, said Bhutto "was very openly threatening these tribal people.""Naturally some of them could have done it," he said. Murder of Ms Bhutto



Pakistani former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto has been assassinated in a suicide attack. Ms Bhutto - the first woman PM in an Islamic state - was leaving an election rally in Rawalpindi when a gunman shot her in the neck and set off a bomb.

At least 20 other people died in the attack and several more were injured.

President Pervez Musharraf has urged people to remain calm but angry protests have gripped some cities, with at least 11 deaths reported.

Security forces have been placed on a state of "red alert" nationwide.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the attack. Analysts believe Islamist militants to be the most likely group behind it.

Ms Bhutto, leader of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), had served as prime minister from 1988-1990 and 1993-1996, and had been campaigning ahead of elections due on 8 January. It was the second suicide attack against her in recent months and came amid a wave of bombings targeting security and government officials.

Nawaz Sharif, also a former prime minister and a political rival, announced his Muslim League party would boycott the elections.

He called on President Musharraf to resign, saying free and fair elections were not possible under his rule.

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency session and later said it "unanimously condemned" the assassination.

Ms Bhutto's coffin was removed from hospital in Rawalpindi and has now arrived by plane in Sukkur in Sindh province for burial in her home town, Larkana.

Her husband, Asif Ali Zardari, has arrived in Pakistan from Dubai to escort the coffin to its final resting-place.

The attack occurred close to an entrance gate of the city park where Ms Bhutto had been speaking.

Police confirmed reports Ms Bhutto had been shot in the neck and chest before the gunman blew himself up.

She died at 1816 (1316 GMT), said Wasif Ali Khan, a member of the PPP who was at hospital.

Ministers, top civil servants to get 4% to 21% in 2nd pay rise

SINGAPORE'S ministers and top civil servants will start the New Year with a pay increase, ranging from 4 per cent to 21 per cent.

This is the second phase of an increase that was decided on in April.

Under the revised salary package announced by the Public Service Division (PSD) on Thursday, ministers at the starting grade will take home $1.94 million next year - an increase of 21 per cent over this year's $1.6 million.

MPs and administrative officers - the elite of the civil service - will see their salaries going up by around 4 per cent or more.

The changes come after the first round of pay hikes in April, when the Government also announced that civil service salaries would be adjusted over time to keep pace with private sector benchmarks.

Minister-in-charge of the Civil Service Teo Chee Hean said on Thursday that the move was in keeping with April's announcement.

'Public sector salaries move up and down with the market. In this tight labour market, private sector salaries have moved up significantly, as the benchmark figures show. The service needs to follow promptly in order to attract and retain good people,' said Mr Teo, who is also the Defence Minister.

But he noted that actual pay would still be tied to performance. This includes individual performance and how the economy does.

'We are careful to link rewards closely to performance. We have increased the proportion of annual salary that is variable. At the senior levels as much as 50 per cent of the annual salary is now performance-based,' he said.

With the pay revision, the annual salary for President SR Nathan will go up from $3.1 million this year to $3.87 million in 2008, the Prime Minister's from $3.09 million to $3.76 million, ministers and senior permanent secretaries, from $1.593 million to $1.94 million, entry superscale grade Admin officers, from $384,000 to $398,000 and MPs, from $216,300 to $225,000 (see tables below).

Their pay increases will come in the form of a higher monthly salary and a fatter performance bonus.

For instance, ministers at the entry grade of MR4 will get an average of 9 months performance bonus, on top of the GDP bonus, which can fall between 3 and 8 months, depending on econommic growth.

In a statement, the PSD said that this round of changes would bring MR4 salaries to 77 per cent of the private sector benchmarks, to which it is pegged. The April revisions had brought it to 73 per cent of the benchmark.

The benchmark is set at two-thirds of the median pay of the top 8 earners in banking, law, engineering and accountancy, as well as employees of multinational corporations and local manufacturers.

This was $2.2 million as of April but has been revised to $2.7 million when calculating next year's pay.

Malaysia invoked a tough internal-security law on Thursday to indefinitely detain five ethnic Indian activists from a group that had staged a mass anti-government protest last month. A police official, who declined to be named, said the five belonged to the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), which stunned the government by bringing more than 10,000 ethnic Indians onto the streets to complain of racial discrimination. One of those detained on Thursday was a Hindraf leader, lawyer P. Uthayakumar, who had already been charged with sedition for alleging that Malaysia practised "ethnic cleansing" of Indians, which make up about 7 percent of the population. "They said they were arresting him under the ISA (Internal Security Act), but they didn't say where they were taking him,"; said Shantha, who answered Uthayakumar's mobile phone after news of the detentions and said she was his secretary. She gave the names of three other detainees as M. Manoharan, V. Ganapatirau and T. Vasanthakumar. She said she was not aware of a fifth detainee, though the Hindraf Web site gave the fifth name as K. Kengadharan, also a lawyer. The opposition has accused Abdullah of using public order as an excuse to crack down on peaceful dissent' "We condemn these arrests,"; said Lim Guan Eng, head of the opposition Democratic Action Party. "It is a desperate act of last resort and if the government has any evidence, it should charge them in an open court. We urge the government to seek national reconciliation, not confrontation with disaffected, marginalised and dispossessed Malaysians."

Malaysiakini - 'Indians not gaining from gov't programmes'- Dec 13, 07 12:55pm Indian Malaysian social groups have been galvanised into action over the plight of the community, following the Nov 25 mass rally called by the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf). 

In a statement issued yesterday by Malaysian Hindu Sangam chairperson A Vaithilingam, a group of 48 Indian-based non-governmental organisations acknowledged that some 30,000 Indians who had gathered in Kuala Lumpur for the rally had “carried their frustrations, aspirations and hope for a better future”.

However, the group also expressed apprehension, concern and regret over “the increasingly strident voices of disunity threatening ethnic harmony among Malaysians”.

“It is clear that a significant segment of the community feels that their religious, educational, social ane economic rights and interests are being marginalised, and feel alienated from the mainstream of development and progress of our nation,” they said in the statement.

“Although the (five-year) Malaysia Plans and Outline Perspective Plans have recognised the increasing income disparity among Malaysians and have taken positive measures to tackle it, clearly the government’s intervention programmes have not adequately addressed the needs of the Indian community.”

Among the more prominent NGOs which endorsed the statement are the Malaysian Hindu Sangam, Sri Murugan Centre, Malaysian Associated Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Group of Concerned Citizens and Divine Life Society PJ.

Apart from youth groups and those based in religion, other NGOs represent the main cultural groupings - Tamils, Ceylonese, Malayalees and Telugus - in the Indian Malaysian community.

Proposals being formulated

Explaining that they are committed to overcoming the “serious problem” in a concerted way, they said they have consolidated their resources and are in the process of formulating proposals to be submitted to the government within the next three months.

“We...hope that our concerns can be addressed directly by the prime minister through dialogues and discussions and that the government will formulate appropriate policy measures, implementation strategies and monitoring mechanisms,” they added.

The Hindraf rally was called to support an attempt to submit a memorandum to the British High Commission in relation to a US$4 trillion class-action suit filed by Hindraf against the British government for bringing the Indians as indentured labourers to Malaya 150 years ago.

Hindraf has argued that the British colonialists did not sufficiently protect Indian interests in the run-up to Independence being granted in August 1957.

Since the rally - which was dispersed by police using tear gas and water cannon - the authorities have cracked down on both leaders and Hindraf supporters.

Doezens have been charged with offences ranging from participation in an illegal assembly to causing mischief and attempted murder of a policeman. Three Hindraf leaders including legal adviserP Uthayakumar have been charged with sedition. 

However, Hindraf’s claims of marginalisation, discrimination and 'ethnic cleansing' of the Indian community have not gone down well with those in government and even among some in the opposition ranks and other NGOs.

ISA to Stop the Dark Force

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has reportedly warned that ethnic Indian activists accused of having links with Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers could be held under internal security laws.

Ethnic rights group Hindraf, which organised mass anti-discrimination protests in November that were broken up with tear gas and water cannon, has been accused of seeking support from the Tigers.

Abdullah said he had ordered police to monitor Hindraf leaders and followers on suspicion of association with terrorists, and that they could be dealt with under the Internal Security Act (ISA) which allows detention without trial.

"ISA is an option," the premier said according to the New Straits Times. "I will decide when the time is right."

"If they are deemed (as a threat to national security) we will know what to do."

Cabinet minister Nazri Abdul Aziz reportedly said Hindraf would be banned if it was found to be supported by groups like the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and Hindu paramilitary group Rashtriya Swayamesevak Sangh (RSS).

"If it is true that Hindraf leaders have links with them, Hindraf is also a terrorist group," the de facto law minister said according to the Star daily.

Malaysia's ethnic Indians, who make up eight percent of the population, are mostly Tamils -- the descendents of indentured labourers brought here by the British colonial rulers in the 1800s.

Hindraf chairman P. Waythamoorthy, who is overseas lobbying international support for the group, claimed the government was conspiring against them.

"This is a state conspiracy to divert from the real issue of the oppression, marginalisation and suppression of the minority Indian community," he said in a statement.

"Hindraf will continue its peaceful struggle both locally and internationally."

On Friday, the government also sought to overturn a decision that allowed three Hindraf leaders including Waythamoorthy to walk free from sedition charges related to speeches they made last month.

The speeches criticised Malaysia's system of preferential treatment for Malays, who make up 60 percent of the population. The court has adjourned the hearing until Monday.

Malaysian INDIANS PROTEST

Thousands of Malaysian Indians protest to highlight plight

For the second time this month, Malaysian riot police fired tear gas and water canons to disperse thousands of protesters who took part in an illegal street rally in the capital on Sunday.

The rally, organised by the Hindu Rights Action Force to highlight their complaints of discrimination by the ruling government, ended with hundreds arrested.

In a rare protest by the one of the country's ethnic minorities, thousands of Malaysian Indians took to the streets of downtown Kuala Lumpur to demand equal rights.

Police had set up roadblocks across the city and obtained a court restraint order in an attempt to foil the rally.

Just the night before, more than 3,000 ethnic Indians from across the country gathered at a Hindu temple at Batu Caves outside the capital.

Many were arrested when they clashed with the police who fired tear gas in a bid to stop them from joining the rally.

At the protest outside the Petronas Twin Towers, police fired hundreds of rounds of tear gas and used water canons with chemical-laced water to disperse the crowd.

But the protesters, who did not have a permit for the rally, still tried to force their way through the police barricades to submit their petition to the British High Commission.

Many picked up the tear gas canisters and threw them back at the police.

M Kulasegaran, lawyer for Hindu Rights Action Force, said: "The time has come for a change and as you can see, thousands of people are not afraid of anybody."

One of the protesters cried: "Because we ask what are the Indian rights? I want to think about the next generation; I want to think about my son."

The protest was organised to highlight the economic woes of the minority ethnic Indians who represent 8 percent of the country's population.

The group Hindraf recently filed a multi-trillion-dollar class action against the British government whom they hold responsible for their decades of discrimination.

The mainstream political parties, meanwhile, have disassociated themselves from the rally, saying that the illegal gathering is an opposition ploy to smear the government's image ahead of the country's general elections.

Just two weeks ago, tens of thousands of Malaysians took to the streets to protest for a free and fair election.

The Malaysian government has warned that it will not hesitate to invoke the country's strict security laws that allow detentions without trial on those involved, simply because while Malaysia practises democracy, taking to the streets is simply not the Malaysian way of life.

The dark force is strong there!

My Ah Neh Friend


FORMER senior Cabinet minister S. Dhanabalan was presented with the nation's highest honour last night for his contributions to the country.

The Temasek Holdings chairman received the Order of Temasek (Second Class) from President S R Nathan at the Suntec City Ballroom.

Mr Dhanabalan, a long-time civil servant, politician and corporate leader, played a significant role in Singapore's development.

He was part of the team that started the Economic Development Board in 1961 to attract investments to Singapore and to create jobs.

From 1968 to 1978, he helped establish the Development Bank of Singapore - now DBS Bank - and played a pivotal role in its transformation into a full service international bank.

He entered politics in 1976, and from 1978 to 1994, held the Foreign Affairs, Culture, Community Development, National Development, and Trade and Industry portfolios.

Previous recipients of the Order of Temasek (First Class) include former president Wee Kim Wee, former chief justice Yong Pung How, and former ministers Lim Kim San, Hon Sui Sen, Goh Keng Swee and S. Rajaratnam.

The next three highest honours this year went to recipients of the Distinguished Service Order.

They are: Lee Foundation chairman Lee Seng Gee; Keppel Corporation executive chairman Lim Chee Onn and Neptune Orient Lines chairman Cheng Wai Keung.

Seven others received the Meritorious Service Medal. They included National Kidney Foundation chairman Gerard Ee; head of the Civil Service Peter Ho; and Lieutenant-General (NS) Ng Yat Chung, the former Chief of Defence Force.

They were among about 350 recipients of the National Day Awards who were honoured last night.

She was fully exhausted after such a long trip with her 6 young kids.

Collecting many suitcases, the family entered the cramped customs area.

A young customs official watched our entourage in disbelief, "Ma'am," he said, "do all these children and this luggage belong to you?"

"Yes, sir," the lady said with a sigh. "They're all mine."

The customs agent began his interrogation "Ma'am, do you have any weapons, contraband or illegal drugs in your possession?"

"Sir," she calmly answered, "if I'd had any of those items, I would have used them by now."

Pak dictator Zia is speeding through Germany with his chauffeur at the wheel on his way to an important address.

Driving down a country road, the chauffeur (who is distracted, looking out the window at the countryside) doesn't see a pig walk out onto the road, and he hits it.

Stopping the car, he jumps out, and Zia climbs out also to see what is going on.
The chauffeur, very distressed by what he's done asks Zia what they should do, and Zia tells him impatiently that they're in a hurry and they should move the pig to the side of the road and go to the address and worry about it later.

All the way to the address the chauffeur, who is a fairly good-hearted person despite his employer, is worried about the family who owned the pig and wondered how they'd react to discovering the pig, so when they arrived he asked Zia whether he shouldn't drive back to the farm and let them know what happened.

Zia agrees before hurrying to the podium, and the Chauffeur hurries back down the road.

Four hours later, he was stumbling down the road, his arms full of gifts.

Zia in a rage demands to know what has happened to him, and the chauffeur explains,
"I did what I thought was right.

I went to the farm where I killed the pig.

When I went and knocked on the door and gave them the news, they gave me these gifts, fed me the best food I've ever tasted and then sent me on my way."

Zia seemed confused by this and asks his chauffeur, "well what exactly did you tell them"

To which the chauffeur replied "I really can't understand it either, all I did was tell them "I'm Zia's Chauffeur, and I killed the pig."

A hawaldar pulls him over and asked, "kahan se aa rahe ho?"
"Iiiizzzzze! daru khane se! izzzeezzzeh!" slurs Mani.

"Lagta hai ke aapne bahot pee rakhi hai"

"Hehheha. Lekin mai thik hu!" Mani says in his usual style.

"Lekin aapko pata hai," says the hawaldar, "kuchh der pahle pahle aapki biwi car se gir gayi?

"Iiizzzzzezzzeeh! Tab to sab thik hai" sighs Mani, "thodi der ke liye to apne ko laga...izzzezze...ke apun behra ho gaya hun....hehhehe".

Prataman gathered the most donations

The President’s Star Charity Show raised more than S$5.4 million on Sunday.

President S R Nathan took centre stage for the first time, reciting a poem called The Desiderata by Max Ehrmann.

Plastic surgeon Dr Woffles Wu tripped the light fantastic with Singapore Idol Hadi Mirza earlier in the show while St James’ Kindergarten students did back—up dancing for Project Superstar winner Darren Tan.

Dr Jannie Tay and friends showed the young at heart could also have fun raising money for the 32 charities including the Parkinson’s Disease Society and the Down Syndrome Association.

The Husbands

A young man married a beautiful woman who had previously divorced 10
husbands. On their wedding night, she told her new husband to "Please
be gentle; I'm still a virgin".

"What?" said the puzzled groom. "How can that be if you've been married
ten times.?"

"Well, husband#1 was a Sales Representative; he kept telling me how
great it was going to be.

"Husband # 2 was in Software Services; he was never really sure how it
was suppose to function; but he said he'd look into it and get back with
me.

"Husband # 3 was from Field Services; he said that everything checked
out diagnostically but he just couldn't get the system up.

"Husband # 4 was in Telemarketing; even though he knew he had the
order, he didn't know when he would be able to deliver.

"Husband # 5 was an Engineer, he understood the basic process but he
wanted three years to research, implement, and design a new state of the-art
method.

"Husband #6 was from Administration; he thought he knew how but he
wasn't sure whether it was his job or not.

"Husband # 7 was in Marketing; although he had a product, he was never
sure how to position it.

"Husband # 8 was a Psychiatrist; all he did was talk about it.

"Husband # 9 was a Gynecologist; all he did was look at it.

"Husband # 10 was a Stamp Collector; ! all he ever did was........ God
I miss him.

" But now that I've married you, I'm so excited".

"Wonderful", said the husband, "but why?

"Your're with the GOVERNMENT"..

With a reputation for her strong stamina despite arduous and hectic
schedules, it was not surprising that someone had to ask the Minister
of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz, where her
source of almost boundless energy came from.

"In my job, you have to be cheerful because it's about wanting people
to invest. Can you imagine if I come to Kobe with a sour face and no
smile?

You will not want to come to Malaysia," she said when asked by a Japanese
businessman to reveal the secret of her staying power at a seminar on
Business Opportunities in Malaysia here today.

"You're great. You're so dynamic and cheerful. We don't see such a
character in our Japanese ministers," said the businessman who was obviously an
admirer of Rafidah's dynamic personality.

In reply, Rafidah said she was a naturally cheerful person. "I am not
making it up (in being cheerful). I laugh a lot and so it's easy for me to be
cheerful. It's not like I'm pretending to be cheerful. My nature is
like that," she said in a matter-of-fact and yet lighthearted manner.

The minister said her energy also came from the fact that she liked her
job."I've been in this job (her present position) for 16 years and I
have been in the government for 27 years," she said, acknowledging that she
was no longer young as she would be 60 years old this year and already has
three grandchildren.

"It makes me happy. You must always do what that makes you happy. If
you're not happy, you don't do it. That's very simple... If you don't like the
thing but you have to do it (anyway), you'll get the sour face," she
said.

Rafidah said she usually did not bring her work home with her. But if
she really has some work to finish up, she would wake up at 5.00 am to
complete it. "If I go home late, my driver will have to wait for me, my security
guard will have to wait for me and my other staff also has to wait for
me.

And they will curse me because they want to go home (early)," she said.

Rafidah said if she did not leave for home by 5.30 pm, there was a
likelihood that there would be five or six people who could be angry
with her. "Angry people are not productive," she said, admitting that she
was also not productive in her work after 5.30pm.

"After 5.30 pm, I'm not productive. So five unhappy staff and one
unhappy minister is not good (at all)," she said.

Rafidah felt that working very late in office was a waste of time."You
would be better off at home, (or) go out for dinner or play golf. So (at
least) you're happy and the next morning you're fresh," she said.

"If you go home late at 11.00 pm or midnight and you don't look at your
family and tomorrow you go into the train to go to office, in the end
you're not happy and your family is not happy," she said.

"The world will go on even if you go home at 5.30. The world will not
stop if you go home at 5.30 pm. "Why must you go home at 11.00 pm? What's
the point and how much work can you do between 5.30pm and 11.00pm?"

"Enjoy yourselves and be happy. I find that I work more when I'm
happy," she said.

President Nathan to perform at President's Star Charity 2007

SINGAPORE : The President's Star Charity will be back on September 30.

President S R Nathan will be performing for the first time in this annual charity event.

Julie Sim-Chew, Executive Producer, President's Star Charity 2007, said: "The highlight for this President Star Charity is of course having President Nathan take centrestage.

"He will be reciting this poem called 'The Desiderata' by Max Ehrmann. It's an inspirational poem where it tells man how to live. When we proposed the idea to him, he was very forthcoming and he has personally selected certain portions of the poem (which) he feels that he is comfortable to deliver."

In another first, Channel NewsAsia presenter Glenda Chong will be the show's host.

She said: "When I present the news, I usually reach my audience through the camera lens. This time round, I will be hosting the PSC and I will actually see them staring back at me.

"I believe it will be a little bit nerve-wrecking, but I have veteran Gurmit, and I have the very glib-talking Desmond. I know I'm in good hands. So I guess I might be a little bit nervous, but ultimately when the show starts, it should not be a problem."

Other stars like Kym Ng, Michelle Chong, Jade Seah and Taufik Batisah will also be performing.

The President's Star Charity 2007 will be shown 'live' on MediaCorp TV's Channel 5 on September 30 from 7.30pm to 10pm.

Proceeds from the show will go to 32 charities.

Last year, the charity event raised more than S$4 million.

Indian Movie must have...

Two brothers separated in childhood will always grow up on different sides of the law. The law-breaker, however, will suddenly turn over a new leaf before the end, bash up the villain (who is the *real* bad guy), and be pardoned for all his sins before the last-scene family reunion. (This is possible only if he has a heroine - see rule 2 below).

If the number of heroes is not equal to the number of heroines, the excess heroes/heroines will a) die b) join the Red Cross and take off to Switzerland before the end of the movie.

If there are 2 heroes in a movie, they will fight each other savagely for at least 5 minutes (10 if they are brothers).

Any court scene will have the dialogue “Objection milord”. If it is said by the hero, or his lawyer, it will be overruled. Else, it will be sustained.
The hero’s sister will usually marry the hero’s best friend (i.e. the second hero). Else, she will be raped by the villain within the 1st 30 minutes, and commit suicide.

In a chase, the hero will always overtake the villain, even on a bullock-cart, or on foot.

When the hero fires at the villain(s), he will never
a) miss
b) run out of bullets. When the villain fires at the hero, he will always miss (unless the hero is required to die, as in rule 2).
Any fight sequence shall take place in the vicinity of a stack of a) pots b) barrels c) glass bottles, which will be smashed to pieces.
Any movie involving lost and found brothers will have a song sung by
a) the brothers
b) their blind mother (but of course, she has to be blind in order to regain her sight in the climax)
c) the family dog/cat.
Police inspectors (when not played by the hero) come in two categories:
a) Scrupulously honest, probably the hero’s father - killedby the villain before the titles.
b) Honest, but always chasing the anti-hero (as in Rule 1), saying “Tum kanoon se bach nahin sakte”, only to pat him in the back in reel 23. Usually, this inspector’s daughter is in love with the anti-hero.
c) The corrupt inspector, (usually the real villain’s sidekick) unceremoniously knocked about by the hero(s) in the climax.

answers and asked him not to reveal the questions to others,since they

were planning to ask the same questions. When he went out naturally
others were curious to know what was asked. He politely declined, but
one persistent Sardar would not leave him.

“At least tell me the answers” he pleaded, and our friend obliged. Then

it was the turn of this Sardar. When he went inside, since his resume
was slightly illegible, the board member asked him.”By the way, what is

your date of birth?” He replied, “The effort began a few years earlier

and final result was in 1947.” Somewhat puzzled, they asked another
clarification.”What is your fathers name?” He replied, “There were so
many. Whom to mention”. If I name one it will be injustice to another”

NDP 2007

One of the many firsts at this National Day Parade is the new ceremonial vehicle used by President S R Nathan to inspect all the 25 contingents of the parade. This is the first time that a President is inspecting all the contingents on wheels. In the past, he would inspect just the guard-of-honour contingent. Now he soooo lazy need car to replace march pass!

National Flag Fly-past

National Flag Fly-past, a traditional crowd favourite, will feature a Chinook helicopter carrying the 5400 sq ft (about 15 per cent bigger than a basketball court) State Flag, escorted by Apache helicopters. The fly-past will be synchronised with the singing of the National Anthem by spectators.

Presidential Salute and Bomb-Burst.

Following the National Anthem, three F-16 D Block 52+ Fighting Falcons in a “Victory” formation will perform a split-second precision and synchronised afterburner fly-past above the crowd at an ascending height from 500 to -1500 ft. This will be followed closely by five F-16 C fighter jets executing a visually spectacular bomb-burst as a salute to the President. To add colour to the aerial salute, the five F-16s will trail off with white smoke from the smoke pod that has been designed by the RSAF.

Apart from the aerial display, the Air Participation Committee will also be supporting the military free fall in the Talents Pool and Show segments, as well as in the Dynamic Defence Display. A total of 18 aircraft, 28 pilots and 13 aircrew will be involved in this year's NDP.

Any one knows about SINDA?

Indian Self Help Organisation.

The Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA) is a self-help group (SHG), that was formed in August 1991 to address the pressing educational and socio-economic issues facing the Indian community in Singapore.

Between September 1990 and March 1991, the Action Committee on Indian Education (ACIE) discussed issues facing the Indian community. The ACIE presented a report, 'At The Crossroads' to the Government in July 1991. This report highlighted the educational under-performance of Indian students and recommended wide-ranging remedial measures.


In this light, SINDA aims to raise the educational performance of Indian students. It also aims to promote family unity and helps in the social and economic development of Singapore Indians.
