It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Singapore. We are honoured to host the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas for the first time in Singapore.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru once wrote, “I have become a queer mixture of the East and West. Out of place everywhere, at home nowhere.” That statement probably reflects the sentiment of many among the Indian diaspora.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is an idea that has different meanings for different people. For some it is something of a homecoming, a gathering of friends and families separated by distance but joined in a common spirit. For others, it is a cultural odyssey, an opportunity to go in search of their ancestral roots.

Many of these migrants thought that their stay in Singapore was only going to be a temporary sojourn. It was no different for early Indian migrants who came to Singapore, many of whom remained deeply attached to their motherland. Indeed, one of the things that was unique about the Indian community in Singapore for many was its transient nature. As Nehru described it: “India clings to me, as she does to all her children, in innumerable ways.” So it was for these migrants. They were a diverse lot, originating from Tamil Nadu to Bengal to Kerala, and comprising Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Jains and Parsees. They came as traders, as soldiers and as the labourers who worked the plantations and built the growing city. But they kept their cultures and their links with India, never losing sight of it, and eventually some of them returned home after staying for a few years.
But there were many that stayed, and gradually a permanent Indian community took root, a development helped along by the creation of independent Singapore in 1965 and our nation-building efforts. Today, that community forms slightly less than 9 percent of Singapore’s population, but this belies the disproportionate influence that it has had on the development of independent Singapore and earlier over the past two centuries. The lives of well-known Indians echo loudly from our history books. Narayana Pillai, supposedly the first Indian civilian to set foot in Singapore, was a prominent builder and founded Singapore’s first Hindu temple, which still stands today. Dr N Veerasamy was a leading doctor and community leader in the early 1900s. S Rajaratnam was a founder of the People’s Action Party and one of Singapore’s most outstanding statesmen and author of the pledge that Singaporeans, young and old, rededicate themselves to.

The annual Prataman's Star Charity Show
THE economic downturn did little to dampen the spirit of giving at the President's Star Charity show, which raised $5.04 million this year, a slight drop from last year's total of $5.4 million.
The theme of last night's show was Singapore Cabaret, a jazzy trip down memory lane hosted by actors Adrian Pang and Michelle Chia.
Popular stars from the 1960s flew into town to perform, including 1960s local pop sensation Veronica Young, 60, who lives in France, and Dutch singer Anneke Gronloh, 66, whose Malay songs captivated audiences here and in Malaysia in that era.
Modern-day performers such as Kym Ng and Fiona Xie sang Chinese cabaret numbers while deejay Vanessa Fernandez and former Singapore Idol participants Olinda Cho and Mathilda D'Silva performed a medley of songs by American female group The Supremes.
In the finale, President S R Nathan wrote Chinese calligraphy while the T'ang Quartet played in the background.
Mr Nathan told reporters after the show that he had been learning calligraphy for 11/2 years now and that the activity was 'therapeutic, especially when the mind is focused on the strokes and characters'.
On the amount raised, which will go to 31 beneficiaries, including the Assisi Hospice which looks after terminally-ill children and adults, and the Rainbow Centre which provides education for children with special needs.
Mr Nathan said: 'People have responded very kindly from all walks of life. I hope we can continue in our efforts to raise awareness about people who are less fortunate than us.'

India Bollywood Star power - Shan Rukh Khan
Bollywood's biggest star does not disappoint, walking into packed crowd to thank them for support.
SOME fans came at 9am even before the doors opened at 11am. And they waited till 4pm before India's biggest star, Shah Rukh Khan, showed up at the Zee Carnival at Suntec City yesterday.
Togged in sunglasses, a light-grey shirt which showed a bit of his toned chest, and black trousers, he went up on stage and danced to the music of his hit film Om Shanti Om's theme music.
'You make me feel very loved, very important. I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart,' Khan, 42, said, to loud shrieks from the audience.
The lifestyle event presented by Zee TV, an Indian network, had drawn at least 10,000 people by the evening.
When the actor made an unscripted move by walking into the packed crowd, people went wild.
'I've been working for 20 years and God has been kind to me. Now, I want to meet the people who have made me what I am,' he said.
That pleased fans like housewife Farah Najria, 23. Together with her mother, aunt, brother, sister and nephew, she had waited at Suntec City since 9am.
'I didn't mind waiting, I am such a huge fan. I am happy I have been able to see him,' she said.
Khan made sure everyone went home happy when he said: 'It has been a while since I last performed here. I'll come back and do a full show for all you wonderful people of Singapore.'
No wonder Suntec city is so dark and smelly on the weekend.

Free weekly for Indians hits right note
TABLA!, the new English-language weekly aimed at the Indian community, drummed up mostly positive reviews with its maiden issue yesterday. Indian expatriates felt the paper was a good source of homeland news, while some Singapore and permanent resident Indians enjoyed the showbiz news.
Coverage in the inaugural edition ranged from Indian-American Neel Kashkari's overseeing of the financial rescue fund in the United States to Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Balaji Sadasivan's views on Singapore's role in forging an India-Asia Pacific link and a profile of Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan. There were also reviews of Indian restaurants and articles on cricket star Anil Kumble and Man Booker Prize nominee Aravind Adiga.
Software engineer Shailesh K. Singh, 36, said tabla! saved him going through online sources for news about India. Mrs Pooja Bailey, a 28-year-old human resource professional who has lived in Australia most of her life, said the paper would keep the Indian community culturally connected and in the loop about upcoming events.

Accidentally I discovered Prata's wreath was shafted to a corner nearest to the Toilet! At a least prominent corner on walkway leading to the source of NeWater. One sick Ah Neh
A 41-YEAR-OLD Indian man was sentenced to 17 years' jail and 14 strokes of the cane by the High Court on Friday for raping his three-year-old daughter.
The victim is the youngest to be raped in Singapore.
The hawker assistant, who was unrepresented, pleaded guilty to the aggravated rape at his Housing Board flat on March 3.
The proceedings was held in camera after the court granted an application by the prosecution.
The man could have been jailed for up to 20 years and caned at least 12 times.

Motor Racing: Force India F1 season gets even worse
The car of Giancarlo Fisichella of team Force India is taken away after a crash during the final practice session.
SINGAPORE - Force India has had a sobering introduction to Formula One in its inaugural season and once again nothing went right for Vijay Mallya's team Saturday.
Giancarlo Fisichella will start last on the grid for the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday and Adrian Sutil will join him at the back.
"I think this is probably our worst qualifying performances so far this year," said Sutil.
"We really don't know where the problem is, but it just seemed the grip was not there and the balance wasn't right. We just have to try our best and find the problems."
The sport's newest outfit are still without a point in either the drivers' or constructors' championship with just four races of the 18-race campaign left.
The experienced Fisichella crashed into the barriers in practice Saturday and although the crew fixed the car's damaged right corner, he got a puncture in qualifying.
"I'm really disappointed -- not for myself, as I think it would have been a tough qualifying anyway -- but for the team as they worked so hard," he said.
Billionaire owner Mallya, who had high hopes at the beginning of the season, said he was confident their luck would change.
"Both drivers had their problems but the team did a tremendous job to get Giancarlo's car out in time for qualifying, something I think we can be proud of," he said.
"As a small team such knock-backs can be tough but everyone has dealt with it admirably. Hopefully, we've had all our bad luck this weekend and can look forward to picking up positions on Sunday." - AFP

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said Friday he plans to hold a Grand Prix in India in 2011, a year later than first thought.
Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Suresh Kalmadi announced last year that he had sealed a deal to host a Grand Prix in New Delhi from 2010.
But Ecclestone told AFP it would likely happen later than that, without giving a reason.
Asked if 2010 was still in the pipeline, he said: "It's all going on as usual, but these things take time.
"Probably 2011 is what I want."
India's ambitious F1 plans were first unveiled in June last year when the IOA said it had received a letter from Ecclestone allowing the country to host a race subject to meeting certain conditions, like building a track.
Millions of Indians watch F1 on television, often with the same passion they reserve for the country's most popular sport -- cricket.

India, sisters of Mother Teresa assaulted by Hindu radicals and arrested by police
The fundamentalists attacked the religious, accusing them of the "kidnapping and forced conversion" of four children between one and two years old. Although their identification documents were in order, the children were taken away from the sisters and put in a government hospital. Tough condemnation by the Indian Church.
New Delhi (AsiaNews) - The Missionaries of Charity are again in the crosshairs of the fundamentalists: yesterday, September 5 - the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta - four sisters of Mother Teresa were attacked by about 20 Bajrang Dal activists at the Durgh train station in Chhattisgarh, a state in central India. The Hindu radicals forced them off the train, and then handed them over to police officers while chanting anti-Christian slogans.
The Hindu fundamentalists accused the sisters - Sr Mamta, the mother superior, Sr Ignacio, Sr Josephina, and Sr Laborius - of the "kidnapping and forced conversion" of four children between one and two years old, whom the religious were taking from their home in Raipur to the Shishu Bhava charity center in Bhopal. The activists followed the women to the police station, "insulting them and chanting slogans against the Christians".
The sisters presented all of the identification documents for the children and their travel permit, in addition to other documentation brought later by the religious from the house in Bilaspur. In spite of this documentation, the children were taken to be housed temporarily at the government hospital in Durg, while the documents and identity papers presented by the sisters are verified by the judicial authorities.
"The mob threatened to beat us up, but I was not afraid", Sr Mamta tells AsiaNews. Her only concern is for the children, who require care and assistance, "but most of all our love. We love these darlings like our own, that is our pain".
The sister says that she "prayed to Mother Teresa" (yesterday was the anniversary of her death, and her liturgical feast day), entrusting the "well-being of the children" to her. She emphasizes that this new episode of "persecution" is an integral part of the missionary task of "witnessing to Christ" entrusted to them by the founder of the order. Although she got no sleep during the night spent at the police station, the following morning - today, September 6 - she took part in Mass, "thanking God and our beloved Mother Teresa".
The Indian Catholic Church has taken a tough stance, through the head of the bishops' conference, who denounces the climate of hostility and terror toward Christians. "I am absolutely shocked", says Cardinal Osvaldo Gracias, "at the baseless and fabricated allegations of conversion levied against the Missionary of Charity". The prelate stresses that he knew "Mother Teresa personally, and I was also involved with her mission, and I can vouch for the fact that never has any baby or anyone been converted by the Missionaries of Charity, either in the remotest rural area or in any part of the world".
In condemning this new attack against the Christians, Cardinal Gracias accuses those who "are instrumental in poisoning minds" and foster interconfessional confrontation: "This is a climate of intolerance [against Christians] that is growing in the country, and it will have serious drastic long-term effects on Indian society".
This new episode of violence against the sisters confirms the growing climate of hostility toward Christians, in the crosshairs of the Hindu fundamentalists who are seeking by every means to eliminate their mission and their charitable works in the country.

Mustaq Ahmad - Runs Mustafa Centre, the iconic 24-hour store in Little India, Singapore, stuffed with more than 150,000 inexpensive items ranging from beds to spices. First opened in 1971 by Mustaq's father, an Indian immigrant, and his uncle. Father passed away in 2001. Shares ownership of the $200 million (sales) store with his wife and uncle. Forbes ranks him the 27th richest person in Singapore in 2006.

As Group Managing Director of the New Straits Times Press, his role in corrupting minds is far-reaching indeed. This sycophantic editor who once called for foreign journalists to be arrested under ISA for reporting the truth tried to mould public opinion by hiding the excesses of the ruling party and heaping undeserved praise on corrupt leaders to keep them in power. The strategies used include biased opinion pieces, omission of all negative reporting of the establishment, public airing of unsubstantiated allegations against political opponents without right of reply, sycophantic adulation of the prime minister, reporting only the negative points of the opposition and playing them up, outright lying and filtering foreign viewpoints for the favourable comments only.

He ran a banal kangaroo court which was so blatantly biased that it will forever shame the nation in the eyes of the world. The way that Paul bulldozed the flimsy prosecution's case through while suppressing material evidence from being aired speaks of a pure unadulterated evil . He held the future of the nation in his hands but he chose to sell his soul to the devil for a pittance.

With a corrupt man at the helm, the last bastion of democracy fell to Mahathir
He is the Chairman of the Election Commission which comes to the fore to conduct the general elections every 5 years. When all checks and balances have been removed in the administration of government, the general election is the last bastion of democracy and the final check and balance to a power hungry dictator. This is in theory but the sad reality is that even the Election Commission has been corrupted by Mahathir. The 1999 elections was anything but free and fair. A massive 650,000 newly registered voters who were generally perceived as critical of the government were not allowed to vote on the shaky premise that it took the EC a mind boggling nine months to register them. The EC also failed to correct the stirring of racial and religious fears by Barisan Nasional politicians to garner votes.

The ACA's most celebrated failure is its inability to conclude investigations into the Perwaja Steel case and bring charges against Tan Sri Eric Chia who lost frightening billions for the steel giant under suspicious circumstances. This is despite a devastating auditor's report which detailed fraudulent financial transactions with dummy companies. It also sank into a listless stupor over Anwar's four police reports with documented evidence against political bigwigs. On the other hand the ACA suddenly sprang to life over Datuk Murad's unsubstantiated allegations of billions in Anwar's "master accounts" although it has managed to dig up nothing. The ordinary citizen pays the price of big time corruption in higher prices of utilities and goods and the wastage of public funds.

On issues affecting the Chinese, you will not find this timorous leader speaking out whether it is the Nipah virus devastating the pig industry, non-acceptance of Chinese High School Certificates or criticism of too many Chinese movies in Astro. In fact he is ready and willing to accept erosion in Chinese rights to maintain his personal position, a fine example being his declaration that TAR college will not be upgraded to university status. It must be a bitter irony to the Chinese that this bogus leader who claims to represent them is elected from a Malay dominated electorate.

Just for Laughes
Shamus and Musa fancied a pint or two but didn't have a lot of money between them, they could only raise the staggering sum of one Euro.
Musa said "Hang on, I have an idea."
He went next door to the butcher's shop and came out with one large sausage.
Shamus said "Are you crazy? Now we don't have any money left at all!"
Musa replied, "Don't worry - just follow me."
He went into the pub where he immediately ordered two pints of Guinness and two glasses of Jamieson Whisky.
Shamus said "Now you've lost it. Do you know how much trouble we will be in? We haven't got any money!!"
Musa replied, with a smile. "Don't worry, I have a plan, Cheers!"
They downed their Drinks. Musa said, "OK, I'll stick the sausage through my zipper and you go on your knees and put it in your mouth."
The barman noticed them, went berserk, and threw them out.
They continued this, pub after pub, getting more and more drunk, all for free.
At the tenth pub Shamus said "Musa - I don't think I can do any more ofthis. I'm drunk and me knees are killin'me!"
Musa said, "How do you think I feel? I lost the sausage in the third pub.

But the fifth surgeon shut them all up when he observed, "You're all wrong. Politicians are the easiest to operate on. There's no guts, no heart, noballs, no brains and no spine, and there are only two moving parts, the mouth and the asshole - and they are interchangeable.

Sick Indian Man
A 27-year old indian allegedly raped his four-year-old daughter repeatedly at their home in Kangkar Pulai.
The contract worker's heinous act was uncovered when the victim complained of pain in her private parts.
When the mother, in her 20s, inspected her, she found blood in her daughter's private parts.
The girl then told her that her father had done things to her, which prompted the mother to lodge a police report.
Nusajaya OCPD Supt Abd Aziz Ahmad said police picked up the suspect on Tuesday.
'Initial investigations revealed that the suspect committed the offence repeatedly at their home while the wife was busy taking care of their two other children.
'The victim has been sent to the Sultanah Aminah Hospital for treatment and a medical check-up,' he said.
Supt Abd Aziz said the suspect might have committed the offence since early this month.
He added that the suspect also has a six-year-old son and a three-month-old baby. - The Star

Funds that can be used to air-condition schools so students can concentrate better, funds for education programs for the poor to get them out of their situation, funds for medical subsidies, funds for R&D that will make S'pore a better place to live in, etc.
With this amount you can even start a trust fund that can pay $10,000 a month perpetually (and this amount will keep growing) that can be used to fund other worthy causes.
But as it stands, all this money is going to one man. How do you justify $9,000 of economic value a DAY as a ceremonial President? What do you do to justify this?
And then there's the problem of conflict of interest. One of the President's roles is to safeguard the country's reserves. When you're getting paid this kind of salary by the very people you're supposed to watch over, and you risk being removed for asking too many questions, isn't there an obvious conflict of interest?

Kerala's unholy men
On tourist brochures, the southern Indian state of Kerala markets itself as 'God's Own Country'. But now, some godmen in the state are finding that they can't really have the run of the place.
The state government is on a hunt for men who have been accused of a host of crimes, including rape, molest and fraud.
It started with the arrest last month of Santhosh Madhavan, 35, who is also known as Swami Athmachaitanya.
Madhavan, 35, has been charged with the rape of a teenage girl, possession of marijuana and cheating a businesswoman.
During raids on his premises, a tiger skin and a large number of pornographic films and a police officer's uniform were found.
He is accused of cheating a Dubai-based Kerala businesswoman, MrsSerafin Edwin, of 4.5 million rupees ($145,000) in 2002.
She alleged in her complaint that she met the godman in Dubai and agreed to start a business with him. But after she gave him the money, he disappeared. She filed a case against him in Dubai and Interpol issued an arrest warrant.
His arrest on 13May came after a week-long drama that included his surrender to the police earlier and then release for 'lack of evidence'.
FROM PRIEST TO BUSINESS
Born to a poor family, Madhavan started as a temple priest, but soon switched to astrology and real estate business.
Police who raided his guest house found documents regarding several land deals, some of them suspected to be illegal.
Some of the obscene CDs, reports say, are hidden camera recordings of his 'VIP guests in action on the bed'.
Many politicians and police officials who appear on Madhavan's photo albums have quickly distanced themselves from him. A deputy superintendent of police has been suspended for being too close to him.
This officer is said to have helped Madhavan oversee his wedding arrangements last year.
The state government has ordered a detailed inquiry into his wealth.
Meanwhile, the Kerala High Court has ordered him placed in police custody till 17Jun.
Three complaints of rape have since been filed against the godman by three underaged girls.
They alleged that they were forced into sexual relations with him and appeared in a pornographic video.
Recounting how she met him, MrsEdwin told the Khaleej Times: 'A friend of mine had introduced Santosh Madhavan to me saying that he was an astrologer and had supernatural powers.
'When I visited him, he gave me a ring studded with stones. He convinced me later that he will help me buy a hotel in Deira (Dubai).'
The godman was then running a high-profile ashram in Kochi, Kerala, that was allegedly frequented by top politicians, police officials and film stars.
Even after India's Central Bureau of Investigation issued a warrant many months ago, he was not immediately arrested by the state police.
Why did Mrs Edwin remain silent all these years?
She claimed that she had received threatening calls from Kerala to withdraw the complaint.
But things changed when a local magazine article appeared.
The magazine named Madhavan as an alleged gun-runner who is wanted by the Indian federal police in connection with the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts. It alleged that Madhavan was living under a new identity as a godman in Kerala.
When the police, under pressure from the media and certain political parties, launched an enquiry, they found that Madhavan, who had turned himself into Swami Amritachaitanya, was not the gun-runner but the man wanted by the Dubai Police for the 2002 cheating case.
After the article appeared, MrsEdwin flew to Kerala and told the police that Madhavan even tried to kill her in Dubai after she demanded that he return her money.
He is alleged to have also visited Bahrain and Qatar and collected money from unsuspecting Indians working there.
'Madhavan came to Bahrain at least three times in the last five years,' one victim in Bahrain, who did not want to be identified, told the Gulf Daily News.
'He held talks and seminars on spirituality and told people to invest in a hill resort he was building in Kerala. He also made us believe that he was a social worker and was planning to start a charity institution in Kerala.'
The man alleged that Madhavan asked those who attended his talks to invest in a charity project. He is alleged to have raised at least 60,000 Bahraini dinars ($220,000) from Bahrain residents.
The Peninsula newspaper reported that Madhavan allegedly collected four million Qatari riyals ($1.5m) from Indian professionals, who were offered shares in hotels, resort projects and other profit-making ventures in Kerala. - AP

Top Ah Neh gives out awards yet again!
Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Raja Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Ali bin Hj Awang Md Daud, president of Brunei Darussalam National Scouts Association, recently received the 'Silver Lion' Award from the Singapore Scouts Association at the Presidential palace.
The 'Silver Lion' Award was presented by Mr S R Nathan, the president of the Republic of Singapore in his capacity as the head of Singapore Scout Association.
The award honoured Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Raja Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Ali's contribution to young people through excellent service to the scout movement.
Also receiving the award were scout leaders of Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Singapore.
The Silver Lion Award is conferred on adult leaders who have served the Association with great loyalty and whose contributions have made a significant impact on the Scout movement in Singapore.
Err... why give foreigners then???
Being a scout himself, no wonders he gives this award...

Indian man retracts statement, jailed for 25 years
An Indian national who tried to retract his admission to having consensual sex with his stepdaughter since she was 11 was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to be caned the maximum 24 strokes, news reports said on Friday.
The 37-year-old information technology specialist gave police five statements over a three-week period, after his arrest in May 2007, when he confessed in detail.
In court on Thursday, he insisted that there had been no sexual relationship between them at all. “Where's the proof?” The Straits Times quoted him as asking during final arguments in which he defended himself.
The Singapore resident cannot be identified to protect the girl's identity.
The step-father said he gave police “false statements” out of fear and to get the investigations over with so that he could tell the truth when he got to court. “In my fear and using my imagination, I gave such a story as I was told to do so,” he said, noting he had been handled roughly by police officers.
He stuck with the same version in talks with a psychiatrist, claiming he was still frightened. He also complained that the police had not stopped his wife and stepdaughter, both key witnesses, from leaving in August for India.
He claimed that he had been set up by the two of them after they learned of his affair with a colleague.
The Interpol bureau in India has been asked to help find the mother and daughter, now 14.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Gordon Oh said the victim's absence is not a reason for acquittal. The law states that a person can be convicted on his statements to the police as long as the court is satisfied they were made voluntarily.
The law states that anyone who has sex with a child below the age of 14, with or without consent, is guilty of statutory rape.

President Nathan, MM Lee to attend Beijing Olympics
President S R Nathan will attend the Beijing Games from Aug 12 to 16, in support of the Singapore's National Team. MINISTER Mentor Lee Kuan Yew will represent Singapore at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on Aug 8, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. MM Lee will return for the National Day celebrations on Aug 9.
Following that, President S R Nathan will attend the Beijing Games from Aug 12 to 16, in support of the Singapore's National Team.
After Beijing, President Nathan will visit Henan and return to Singapore on Aug 18.

Oh Poor Chink
President S R Nathan said he is especially saddened by the great loss of lives, which include many children and youths, following Monday's earthquake in China.
In his letter to Chinese President Hu Jintao, Mr Nathan praised how the government has mobilised its people and its "unflagging effort and swift response to the disaster, despite the limitations of the terrain and distance".
President Nathan also said he is confident that under President Hu's leadership, China will quickly overcome the consequences of the tragedy and "restore the people's confidence and resoluteness" in facing such a disaster.
Mr Nathan said he hopes the affected regions will return to normalcy as soon as possible.

Singapore Help out in the China's Quake
A 55-STRONG team from Singapore will leave for earthquake-hit Chengdu province in China on Friday to help the local authorities in their search and rescue efforts.
A Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said the contingent from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (DART) will be led by LTC Ng How Juah, Commander of the 4th Civil Defence Division.
MFA said Singapore is sending the overseas rescue team at China's request.

Ah neh marry angmoh, marriage broke down, kill own kids by stabbing them to death and try to kill himself by burning them in car.

An Indian-origin man is being investigated by the UK police after his two minor sons were found stabbed to death in a burnt car in Glasgow.
Ashok Kalyanjee, the father of six-year-old Paul and two-year-old Jay who were discovered in a blood-spattered car on Saturday, is in critical condition after he suffered burn injuries while allegedly trying to set afire the vehicle.
The police said they were waiting to interview Kalyanjee,40, who is under police guard at a hospital in Glasgow. The police confirmed they were treating the deaths of the two children as murder.
Their mother, Giselle Ross, in a short statement said: “Paul and Jay were beautiful boys who were well-loved by all the family and everyone who knew them.”
The couple are understood to have been separated and Kalyanjee, a former post office worker who was described locally as a taxi driver living in the Cowcaddens area of central Glasgow, had weekend visiting rights to his sons, The Guardian reported.
“They did not deserve to die. Paul wasn’t even allowed to play outside in case he came to any harm,” Ross said.
“Both boys loved their mum they were real mummy’s boys. They are irreplaceable and are greatly missed by all the family.”
Paul had been a well-liked pupil at Royston primary school, said his head teacher, Elizabeth Davidson. “Paul was a lovely, well-behaved, quiet young boy. I’m certain that children who knew Paul and his brother will be devastated when they learn of this tragic news,” she said.
“The school has been made aware of the incident and will be supporting the mother in any way it can. Our thoughts and prayers are with her at this sad time,” she said.

President S R Nathan visited New Zealand from 25 April to 1 May 2008. This was the first State Visit by a Singapore Head of State to New Zealand.
In Wellington, President Nathan met senior New Zealand leaders including Governor-General Anand Satyanand, Prime Minister Helen Clark and Deputy Leader of the Opposition Bill English.

Just for Laughes
This is hilarious..... even an Englishman could not construct sentences using numbers, which is exclusive only to Singaporeans.
Musa was asked to make a sentence using 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
Not only did he do it 1 to 10, he did it again from 10 back to 1. This is what he came up with.....
1 day I go 2 climb a 3 outside a house to peep. But the couple saw me, so I panic and 4 down. The man rushed out and wanted to 5 with me. I ran until I fell 6 and threw up. So I go into 7-even and grabbed some 8 to throw at him. Then I took a 9 and try to stab at him. 10 God he run away.
10 I put the 9 back and pay for the 8 and left 7 -eleven. Next day I called my boss and told him I was 6 . He said 5 , tomorrow also no need to come back 4 work. He also asked me to go climb a 3and jump down. I don't understand. I am so nice 2 him but I don't know what he 1 .

Free meals for Ah Nehs
THERE may be no such thing as a free lunch, but two non-profit groups here are adamant on handing out free breakfasts.
Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2), a research and advocacy group for migrant workers, has teamed up with One Singapore - a local campaign to end global poverty - to provide free morning nourishment to about 80 homeless and penniless Indian workers every weekday.
The meals are typically made up of an uttapam - an Indian pancake - and a cup of coffee or tea.
The project, started a week ago, aims to help more than an estimated 50 workers from India who have made the walkways along Cuff Road their home, some for as long as a year.
They have allegedly been deserted by their employers after being injured while working, or are waiting in Singapore until the cases pending against their former employers are heard.
They are issued Special passes (S-passes) in the meantime, which forbids them to take on permanent employment.
"I let them come in to use my toilet or fill up their water bottles. I feel so sorry for them but this is the only way I can help," said Mr S Shanmuganathan, 54, manager of Sutha's Restaraunt on Cuff Road, which provides the free breakfasts.
To qualify for the free food, served from 7am to 9am, Mondays to Fridays, workers have to show their S-pass or a letter from their doctor or lawyer and have their names recorded.
TWC2 and One Singapore have been footing the breakfast bill - of $2 a worker - with donations from the public.
Church volunteer groups and the nearby Perumal temple also provide the workers with free dinners on weekdays, but these are given out on an ad hoc basis.
"Food is a basic human need and we wanted to focus on breakfast particularly so the workers can have a positive start to each day," said TWC2 helpline manager Sha Najak.
She estimates, however, that the $2,200 balance they have left in their coffers for the project will only be enough for the next two months.
Plumber Mr Ayyavoo Thuniayar, 34, is one thankful recipient of the food service. The Tamil Nadu native has been going to the restaurant every morning for the past two weeks.
At night, he sleeps outside the Singapore Gujarat Society's premises on 36 Cuff Road. He has been stationed there for the past two months after being evicted from his workers quarters by his employer, a local construction firm, following a worksite accident in January that left him with a crushed leg.
A medical certificate exempts him from work until May 12 but the full insurance payout will be made out to him after he is fully recovered, he said.
He added: "My employers divert me to one another when I ask for the salary they owe me. Now I have no money for a room or food.
"If this is only happening to me, it's okay, but it is the same story with many and they are scared to speak out.

Complaint I received
SR Nathan graduated from the old University of Malaya in Singapore with a Diploma in Social Work. Whilst he could have had read Law or any other money making course, he chose to dedicate himself to the betterment of his fellow man by pursuing such a qualification.
His thesis on the "Exploitation of Asian workers in the Harbour Board" caught the eyes of those in power, and upon graduation, he was quickly enlisted to serve the Board to settle the problems he hada surfaced.
As a civil servant, he was place in the line of fire when he was offered as a hostage to terrorists in place of some poor Malay boatmen seized by the Jap and Arab terrorists. When asked how he managed to stay calm while held as hostage by the terrorists, SR Nathan replied : "I was a trained social worker".
Some of you disrepecfully call him Prataman. SR Nathan deserves more respect. He is Head of State not because of the money. If you must make noise, it's the politicians that deserve your venom. SR Nathan was never a politician. He is a brave son of Singapore.

Honour Prataman?
What social contribution or volunteering work has Prataman did since his HUGE pay increase?
President S R Nathan has been conferred the title of ‘Fellow’ by the Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW) for his significant contributions to the social work profession and to society at large.
This was the highlight at the annual Social Workers' Day dinner celebrations which was attended by more than 600 social workers.
Mr Nathan also launched a commemorative book entitled ‘A World to Change: Inspiring Lives in Social Work’. The book documents real-life stories of social workers in the past 50 years.
At the event, SASW also revealed that in a survey of 80 social workers, two-thirds received a higher pay, thanks to increased funding from the Community Development, Youth and Sports Ministry in 2007.
The average pay increase was about S$230. The remaining 33 per cent said their agencies had either not implemented any pay increase or did so selectively.
The survey respondents added that a competitive salary is important in attracting and retaining talent.

A lady walks into a very upscale jewellery shop. She browses around, spots a beautiful diamond bracelet and walks over to inspect it. Bending over to get a closer look, she accidently passes gas.
Extremely embarrassed, she freezes for a few moments and then slowly straightens up and turns around to see whether anyone has noticed her little accident. Her worst fears are confirmed in the form of a salesman standing right behind her.
Cool as a cucumber, the salesman greets the lady with a very professional, "Good day, Madam. How may we help you today?"
Hoping against hope that he may just not have been there at the time of her little 'accident', she asks, "Sir, what is the price of thislovely bracelet?"
He answers, "Madam, if you farted just looking at it, you're going to shit when I tell you the price."

Incredible India
The tourism authorities in India are tightening security to prevent groping hands of sexual perverts from spoiling the experience of holidaymakers lured to the country with a promise of 'Incredible India!'
Top tourism officials, including those in charge of Goa and Kerala states on India's western seaboard which are top draws with beach tourists, have been summoned to New Delhi for intensive consultations.
They will discuss steps to address a menace that threatens to take the sheen off a global advertising campaign which drew five million tourists to India last year and earned the country more than US$12 billion (S$17 billion).
Some 80,000 of those tourists had travelled from Singapore, according to government estimates.
News reports suggest that more than 10 foreign women were molested in various parts of India in the first two weeks of this year.
In the latest incident, a British woman was reportedly raped in Goa on Friday night, just days after a Russian woman was molested there. The beach shack owner who molested the Russian woman has been arrested while police have released an identity sketch of the rape suspect, news reports said.
Chief Minister Digamber Kamat has vowed to nail the culprit in 48 hours.
'We are adopting zero tolerance in such cases,' he told reporters on Sunday. 'We are dealing with each case seriously.'
Goa gained a reputation in the 1960s and 1970s as the favoured watering hole for hippies and marijuana users. Today, thousands of upmarket tourists throng the place.
The Goa incidents came even as a 12-year-old Indian-Canadian girl and her older sister were groped by a security guard at a resort hotel in Kumarakom, a popular tourist destination in the southern state of Kerala.
The guard, 27-year-old Shyju Varghese, was arrested hours after the girls' father lodged a complaint on Sunday. However, the traumatised family chose to end their holiday early and returned to Canada.
Mr V. Venu, Kerala's top official for tourism, told The Straits Times in a telephone interview: 'We cannot condone a single incident, even if it is a lewd remark.
'The hotel that employed the security guard had been careless in outsourcing security. We cannot stop the odd pervert but this one seemed like it could have been avoided.'
Kerala, India's most literate state, is among the country's fastest-growing tourism spots. Last year, it drew 500,000, or 10 per cent, of India's foreign tourists.
The state, particularly its most popular Kovalam beach, had a rash of molest cases in the mid-1990s but a high level of vigilance by the authorities had almost rubbed out the menace.
Of late, however, some cases have surfaced.
On New Year's Eve in the port city of Kochi, formerly Cochin, a beach party was marred by the groping of a young Swedish tourist.
'We are enjoying Kerala and having a good time,' the father of the child told a television reporter who was filming in the area. 'But even as we speak my 15-year-old daughter has just had her behind grabbed by a man.'
Even Mumbai, which shares a reputation with Bangalore as being safe for women, has had some adverse attention lately.
On New Year's Day, readers of the Hindustan Times in New Delhi and Mumbai awoke to screaming headlines that read: 'Shame Old Story'.
The daily catalogued the travails of two young couples who wandered out from the discotheque of the JW Marriott hotel in Mumbai.
A mob on the beach outside laid hands on the women, even as their menfolk tried to protect them. Mumbai police have since picked up several men, using the newspaper photographs as evidence.

India Presents the “One-Lakh Car”
Four years in the making, Tata Motor produced a so-called “one-lakh car”, (one lakh being the Indian term for 100,000) aimed squarely at members of India’s 300-million-strong middle class. Dubbing it the “People’s Car,” Tata hopes to entice consumers with a four to five seater, four-door, rear-engine car with about 30 hp (horsepower).
“It's about necessity. People require four wheels. They cannot go on a bike or scooter anymore. It's entry level cars. Larger cars are for people with extra money. The first car is always a small car,” says Himanshu Tandon, a general manager for sales at one Delhi Hyundai dealership.
The potential for growth and profit in the small-car sector is high. It is estimated that India has a vehicle density of only seven cars per thousand people, compared to the US which already has 477 per thousand. In 2006 alone, an astonishing one million cars were sold in India, with the annual growth rate of sales pegged at 16 percent.
With these figures, it’s no wonder car-makers are all jumping eagerly onto the proverbial bandwagon. Nissan-Renault recently revealed that it too would also strategize how to produce its version of the $3000 car, while India’s Hero Group, a well-known motorcycle manufacturer, is reportedly collaborating with a Canadian company on a mini-car. Maruti-Suzuki is busy with what they call a “competitively-priced” 660cc vehicle; South India’s Bajaj Auto will introduce their entry-level model during next year’s national Auto Expo. Even Xenetis, India’s low-cost computer maker, intends to develop a low-cost car. Tata Motors is going even further by exploring different possibilities with General Electric (GE) in whether the cars could be made from GE’s engineered plastics.
Despite all these shiny, bright ideas, the environmental cost of such a car is not lost on some who argue that instead of pursuing a wasteful, Western model of transportation, public transportation instead should be emphasized, especially at time when India and China are both facing intense pressure to reduce their carbon emissions.
“What we are really worried about is the congestion and the pollution,” said Anumita Roychowdhury, associate director of the Delhi-based Centre for Science and Environment. “In Delhi, public transports manage more than 60 per cent of the transport demand and, if you add the numbers using the new Metro, that is going to increase the [percentage using public transport]. Our immediate policy should be to retain and protect this so that people who are already using it... do not make the move to cars. It is aspirational - people who want to buy cars. But the question should be how easy should we be making it for them?... Once they have started using cars it, will be hard to get them back.”
Indian president Manmohan Singh commented however that India’s current growth may go hand-in-hand with environmental self-empowerment. “Due care must be taken not to allow growth and development prospects in the developing world to be undermined or constrained ... More and not less development is the best way for developing countries to address themselves to the issue of preserving the environment and protecting the climate,” he said

Today, Indian industry is competitive; it has restructured itself; and, it is acquiring a global footprint.
It is now time for Indian industry - as indeed India - to set sights on a new and higher trajectory of competitiveness and globalisation.
The Context
The Indian economy has never had it so good.
Three years of close to 9% growth.
Outstanding performance in the services and industry sectors, both growing at over 11%.
The macro economic indicators of the nation extremely sound.
Investment as a percentage of GDP at a record high.
In the industry and services sectors, innovation, education and dynamism are the order of the day. Indian industry is today resurgent, confident and global in its aspirations.
This is the good news
To catch the next wave of growth, industry has to take note of - rising expectations of customer both in India and overseas; increasing competition from all parts of the globe; the pressure on competitiveness. But the greatest challenge that Indian industry is beginning to grapple with - be it in small, medium or large sectors - is that of talent acquisition and retention. While all sectors seem to be doing extremely well, they also have begun to experience the crunch of people and talent availability in the right measure.
India's Reality
320 million children in India are between the age of 6 and 16. Out of this only 10% will pass school and go beyond.
Approximately 280 million people live below the poverty line and nearly 400 million people in India, live below $2 a day.
India's per capita is at $460, while Sri Lanka is $833 and US is at $30,000.
40 million unemployed people and this numbers are growing. In the next 5 years, the figure could reach to as much as 60 million people, more than entire populations of France, Italy and UK.
90% workforce in the unorganized sector.
30% casual labour with no regular source of income.
India has the youngest population in the world. The median range is 24 and every other population in the world is getting older.
2.5 mn graduates passing out of colleges each year without skills connecting to employment. Mismatch between educational system output and Industry's manpower requirements.
India's opportunity
The correction is not impossible because India also faces a unique opportunity. It is the youngest population in the world; its median age in 2000 was less than 24, compared to 38 for Europe and 41 for Japan. Even China had a median age of 30. Alternatively viewed, this means that India has the unique opportunity to complement what an ageing rest of the world needs the most - productive workers. India in 2025 will have a dependency ratio of 12.1, i.e., for every 100 working-age adults there will be slightly more than 12 persons who are above the age of 65. For China the ratio will be 19.4, for Japan 49, for Europe 33.2.
It is in this context that CII has chosen as its theme for 2007-08 : Building People - Building India.
The Agenda for Action
The core focus of CII work, activities and events will, therefore, relate to people and ways and means of making them efficient, entrepreneurial and innovative - all with the aim of making India and Indian industry even more competitive.
CII will work with the youth in a multi-dimensional mode - adopting the four Missions which were introduced last year :

The approach would be to work strongly in identifying manpower needs, talent gaps and working strongly to make India the undisputed global leader in the matter of skills and talent. Every sector would be catered to - Manufacturing, IT, ITES, Telecom, BPO, Engineering Process Outsourcing, Retail and Agri-business.
In its efforts, CII will focus sharply on fulfilling the needs of small and medium enterprises which form a significant portion of the membership.
To sum up
CII - at the National, Regional, State and Zonal levels - would implement a programme of work which begins to effectively convert the human raw material in our country into a productive force to bolster the competitiveness of Indian industry. Massive programmes covering school dropouts to engineers and PHDs will form a key element of our initiative. In addition, the huge requirement of personnel in the growth sectors of the economy will be addressed. This is besides the initiative on affirmative action which is already underway.
In this multi-pronged approach, the four Missions of CII will provide the vehicles of delivery.
CII believes that the next big ticket item on its agenda ought to be BUILDING PEOPLE - BUILDING INDIA.

A police officer sitting in the next booth heard their conversation

see these two old-timers having sex against a fence. I'll just keep
an eye on them so there's no trouble. So he follows them.
The elderly couple walks haltingly along, leaning on each other for
support aided by walking sticks. Finally, they get to the back of the
tavern and make their way to the fence. The old lady lifts her skirt
and the old man drops his trousers.
As she leans against the fence, the old man moves in. Then suddenly
they erupt into the most furious sex that the policeman has ever
seen. This goes on for about ten minutes while both are making loud
noises and moaning and screaming.
Finally, they both collapse, panting on the ground.
The policeman is amazed. He thinks he has learned something about
life and old age that he didn't know.
After about half an hour of lying on the ground recovering, the old
couple struggle to their feet and put their clothes back on.
The Policeman, is still watching and thinks to himself, this is truly

Singh or Ah Neh - The dark Forces!
At the First Youth for Peace Interfaith Symposium organized by the Singapore Soka Association at Singapore Expo Hall, a representative each of five religions, namely Sikhism, Baha'i Faith, Catholicism, Hinduism and Buddhism, spoke on the theme "Humanizing Religions, Creating Peace".
Satwant Singh, told 4,000 youths of different religions how he had handled people who called him "Mang-ka-li", "Bayee Singh" or "Babu Singh". He said that instead of feeling offended, he would explain his religion to the persons concerned over a cup of coffee. He related his experiences to illustrate the points that misunderstanding of others' religions may cause friction and that enlightening others on one's religion is far better than flying into a rage.
In his opening speech for the symposium, Foreign Minister George Yeo underscored the role of the Government in fostering religious harmony. He pointed out that the Government must always be secular and must take into account the interests of Singaporeans as a whole and not just those of a particular religious group. Hence, from time to time, the Government must act to defuse conflicts.
Singapore disallowed publication of Danish cartoons of Prophet Muhammad in Singapore and stepped in when pictures of Jesus Christ were put on the floor of MRT stations as advertisements for the movie Da Vinci Code. When Taoist joss sticks for the Hungry Ghost Festival grew bigger and bigger, causing air pollution, and when the volume of loudspeakers used by mosques for their azan (prayer calls) were found too high, the Government consulted religious leaders before adopting compromise solutions.

Something about Indian Clocks
An Indian man died and went to heaven.
When he arrived at the heaven Gate, Lord Siva said, "Come on in. I'll show you around. You'lllike it here."
Walking through the gates, the man noticed clocks everywhere?
There were grandfather clocks, wall clocks, watches, and clocks in every corner.
It appeared that heaven was nothing more than a giant clock warehouse.
Surprised at how heaven looked, the man asked, "Lord Siva, what's the deal?
Why are all these clocks here in heaven? Lord Siva replied, "The clocks keep track of things on earth. There is one clock for each person.
Every time the person on earth tells a lie, his clock moves one minute."
"For instance, this clock is for Aru, the used car salesman. If you watch it closely, it will move.
"Click" The minute hand on Aru's clock moved one minute. "Click" It moved another minute. "Aru must be into closing a customer right now," said Lord Siva. "The minute hand on his clock moves all day."
The man and Lord Siva continued walking. Soon, they came to a clock with cobwebs on the minute hand. "Whose clock is this?" asked the man. That clock belongs to the Widow Achi. She is one of the finest,God-fearing, people on earth.I bet her clock hasn't moved in a year or two."
They continued walking and touring heaven. The man enjoyed watching the clocks of all his friends. When the tour was finished, the man said,"I've seen everyone's clock but Mr. Samy Vellu's. Where is his clock?
Lord Siva smiled, "Just look up. We use his clock as a ceiling fan."
No wonder He Lost in the Malaysia Election!

Bad Malaysians
The old priest lay dying in the hospital. For years He had faithfullyserved the people of the nation's capital. He motioned to the nurse tocome near.
"Yes, Father?" she said.
"I would really like to see Khairy and Samy Velu before I die", whispered the priest.
"I'll see what I can do, Father" replied the nurse.
The nurse sent the request to them and waited for a response. Soon theword arrived. Khairy and Samy would be delighted to visit the priest.
As they went to the hospital, Khairy commented to Samy "I don't know whythe old priest wants to see us, but it will certainly help our images."
Samy couldn't help but agree.
When they arrived at the priest's room, the priest took Samy's hand inhis right hand and Khairy's hand in his left. There was silence and a lookof serenity on the old priest's face.
Finally Samy spoke. "Father, of all the people you could have chosen, why did you choose us to be with you as you near the end ?"
The old priest slowly replied : "I have always tried to pattern my lifeafter our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ."
The old priest continued......"He died between two lying thieves. I wouldlike to do the same."
(For those unfamiliar with Malaysian politics, Khairy Jamaluddin is theprime minister's son in law and is widely believed among Malaysian to bethe de-facto prime minister like a back-seat driver in a car, while SamyVelu is the works minister)

Escape of JI leader: How can this happen in S'pore?
MANY Singaporeans reacted to news of the escape of JI leader Mas Selamat Kastari from a high-security detention centre with disbelief and incredulity.
This posting from Jordan Tan in the straitstimes.com discussion board aptly summed up the reaction of many others: 'Hello, this is Singapore. How can this happen?'
Added cc1034: 'How can a highly dangerous person escape from a highly secured prison?'
Another disbelieving reader, who goes by the monicker howaiyee, said: 'Security at the detention centre is 'tight'. He walks with a limp. Yet he managed to escape. What a shame!'
'How can we feel safe anymore?' said a worried Lim Boon Hee.
Mas Selamat, 47, who heads the Singapore Jemaah Islamiyah terror network, escaped from the Whitley Road Detention Centre at 4.05 pm on Wednesday, sparking an island-wide manhunt involving thousands of police, SAF, Gurkha and Special Operations Command forces.
The Straits Times online discussion board has also been buzzing with readers' comments, with postings coming in at 3 am in the morning. As at 2.15 pm, there were 186 postings on this issue, with 16,528 views.
Many readers expressed concern about the breach of security which allowed the terror leader to slip away.
Said raymond_lo: 'I feel throughly let down by our security men.'
A user who signed off as a 'terrified student from SCGS', said she would not be going to school on Thursday.
Several also urged the authorities to provide more information about the escape.
Said shean777: 'Please, Home Affairs Minister, say something or more importantly, DO something!'
Indeed, a user who went by the name lib27 put it bluntly: 'The whole Singapore is waiting for an answer.'
Many readers also offered tips and advice to catch the JI leader.
Suggested mr.speakersir: 'Perhaps the authorities might seriously warn Singaporeans and whoever else in Singapore about the cosequences of sheltering him.. and whoever provides leads to his whereabouts and subsequent capture should be rewarded ... Singaporeans just love rewards!' He also suggested plastering his picture island-wide, terming it the 'great Singapore terrorist hunt.'

Just for laughes
One Ah Singh was enjoying the sun at the beach in America . A lady came ?asked him, "Are you relaxing?" Singh answered, " No, I am Banta Singh."
Another guy came and asked him the same question. Singh answered, "No No Me Banta Singh!"
Third one came and asked him the same question again.
Singh was totally annoyed and decided to shift his place.
While walking he saw another Singh soaking in the sun. He went up to him and asked, "Are you Relaxing?" The other Singh was a lot more educated and answered, "Yes, I am relaxing." The Singh slapped him on his face and said, Stupid, idiot.
Everyone is looking for you and you are sitting over here!"

Sardar Gurbachan Neh is appearing for his University final examination. He takes his seat in the examination hall, stares at the question paper for five minutes, and then in a fit of inspiration takes his shoes off and throws them out of the window.
He then removes his turban and throws it away as well. His shirt, pant, socks and watch follow suit.
The invigilator, alarmed, approaches him and asks what is going on. "Oye, I am only following the instructions yaar," he says, " it says here, 'Answer the following questions in brief' ..."

Jasmeet: "What are you searching for?"
Santa: "Hidden cameras!"
Jasmeet: "And what makes you think that there are hidden cameras here?"
Santa: "That guy on TV knows exactly what I am doing. Why every few minutes he keeps saying 'You are watching the Star World channel'. How does he know that?"
Ha ha... The Malaysian are watching you and making a DVD of your love life...

Just for Laughes
A man was in his front yard mowing grass when his neighbor, a Singh, came out of the house and went straight to the mailbox. He opened it, looked inside, slammed it shut, and stormed back into his house.
A little later he came out of his house again, looking nervous, went to the mailbox, again opened it, and slammed it shut again.
Angrily, back into the house he went.
As the man was getting ready to edge the lawn, here our Singh came again, looking very heated up. He marched to the mailbox, opened it and then slammed it shut harder than ever.
Puzzled by his actions, the man asked him, "Is something wrong?"
To which the ferocious Singh replied, " There certainly is! My stupid computer keeps telling me I have mail!"
